This is directly off of the AKC website. It doesn't seem too awfully difficult. I think a lot of my dogs would pass, except for the 'staying' part would trip most of them up.
Sorry I forgot to ad the link

this was written by a friend of mine
There is just one CGC test. It is comprised of 10 exercises all of which can be done on lead. I have tested quite a few dogs and frankly to pass the test the Dog has to have some degree of basic obedience. Not formally trained but just good common sense manners.
The AKC on their web site gives the test description and what is necessary to pass the ten step test. The areas that I have found that most household pets are most likely to fail are: grooming ( just a quick brushing done by the tester) Some take the "don't touch me" frame of mind. Out for a walk ( loose lead is the key here) no barking, prancing, lunging allowed. No need for finely executed sits but when the handler stops - Dog must also do it.
Above all the testers are cautioned to be on the look out for ANY signs of aggression to people or other animals. Extreme shyness can trigger fear aggression which you know is just a mess to deal with. The other exercises deal with separation, distractions, ability to take commands. No treats are allowed on the test and defecation is a disqualification on all but the #10 test when it is given outside.
I would advise anyone who is planning to take the test to get the 10 test exercises (from the AKC site) and practice at a park or location not at your home. dogs do real good at home sometimes and then screw up at the test site because they are not properly socialized.
I would love to offer a ten week course to prepare for the test around here but cannot find a suitable location (cheap and will allow dogs). I watch the dogs being walked around our neighborhood and most of them ( owners) don't have a clue what's supposed to take place on a walk. I think the test is seeking out good manners and stable temperaments. If you have those just a little bit of training will make the test passable. By the way - the test is a pass or fail - no almost or maybes. Must pass all 10 test to earn a CGC.

thanks for the replies.from that website it does look pretty basic and she has had previous training.the only problem she really had was the "place" at a distance , and when a person comes over and asks to pet my Dog instead of stying in "sit" position she stands up .but other than that i think she would do well.she is well socialized, and is not aggressive at all.thanks again. |
