We (my boyfriend and I) just recently got a great dane puppy. We are not living together yet, so the puppy stays with him and his family (along with 3 other dogs). But I am getting my own place and want to get MY Dog finally. I'm wondering if it is a good idea to have my puppy considering that he just got his. I am also taking into consideration that once I have my own place, my boyfriend (and his puppy) will probably be there all the time too. So I am asking for advice on whether getting my Dog now is a good idea, or if I should try and wait until the puppy is a certain age? He is currently only 6 weeks old so I will at least wait until 8 weeks so that he has his shots. Any advice is helpful. Thanks!

This may sound harsh, but you both really need to get to know dogs better and how to and not to buy one before even considering adding another.
There is no way that a decent Dane breeder will let a pup go at 6 weeks, not even the lesser bybs I know will. Please read breeders codes of ethics and the advice the site has to offer on how to chose a breeder.

I also would say if its going to be a live together thing its not a very good idea, Danes need individual attention and another puppy would make things even harder.
One question comes to mind, why isnt a dane enough Dog for two people to share? Dont make life complicated right now, get to know one another and get this puppy started off right, I would wait until he is housebroke and has good reliable manors before getting another dog. As soon as the pup hits 12 weeks you will understand just how much of a handful the breed can be, but they are the best dogs.

you can visit my site, www.cannonkennels.com to pick up some dane information, or feel free to ask here and Ill do my best to help you.

2 major rules, no puppy food and no distemper shots.

Any puppy requires ALOT of attention its just like raising a baby and for anyone you know thats had a baby ask them how they would feel it they would of had Twins instead, its twice the potty training, twice the accidents to clean up twice the mess twice the amount of your stuff chewed up twice the feeding twice the training(which takes LOTS of time, dogs don't come trained they have to be taught it) twice the nipping (puppy's natural form of play)It would be extremely hard to raise two Puppies at once Its best to wait, the best things in life are def worth waiting for in my opion. Great danes do need alot of extra attention and jobs to do,or there likely to devolp behavior problems later in life Think of your boyfriends Dog as practice for your future puppy it would be best to wait at least a 1 yr to 3 yrs puppys take a while to grow up they become teenagers and start to changellence you alot and are not fully mature till at least 3 years its ALOT of work, and if not done right your gonna end up with problem dogs, Also when you do decied to get your Dog make sure its of the opposite sex of the Dane, its commen for any two dogs of the same sex to not get along and I agree whatever breeder gave you a great dane puppy at 6 weeks was not looking out for the best interest of the dog, your going to have alot of extra training and extra work teaching early disapline to that Dog Good luck

dane....you gave the advise of no puppy food...and no...distemper shots...but...you didnt say why...or advise of the alternative....how is she supposed to know?? i know you wrote this in another post...about the diatemper vaccine...but what is the alternative to the puppy food???? is this beacuse of the protein being too high in the puppy food and the bones growing sooo fast in the danes??? if not...then why???

Hello,

Welcome to the site. Great Danes are wonderful dogs. My husband and I got a Dane when we were just starting out together. He had always wanted a "big" dog. We got Alexis from a very good breeder and her blood line was top notch. Infact her uncle was the number three Dane in the U.S. at the time. We even had the pleasure of watching him shown. Her father was in the top ten Danes in the U.S. at the time. Her mother was a Ch. She was one of 14 Puppies. Alexis was one of the most loving and sweet dogs I've ever known. However she also cost me more money to own. She was sick from the day we got her. I spent around $6 thousand dollars on vet care for her in the four short years of her life. At one point we were paying $190.00 a week in meds for her while we tried to figure out what was wrong with her. I wish I had a picture of the look on the pharmacists face the first time we went to pick up the script, he informed us our insurance wouldn't cover it for some reason and said we should call them and find out why. We explained to him it was for our dog. I know he thought we had lost our minds. She was on those meds for nine weeks. We fed her a medical diet so her food cost $40 a week. In the end she was so sick and the meds we used to control one problem caused others and we were forced to put her down. I had never before or since seen my husband so heart broken.

Now its fair to say that her litter mates were healthy and except for one that died of bloat all lived seemingly heatlhy lives. But it was the luck of the draw for us and could be for you too. Its something to think about. Bloat is not at all uncommon in this breed and that surgery alone can be very costly.

My point to all of this is make sure your wallet can handle two big dogs and anything that could go wrong before you take on two big dogs.

You are right about that one NaturalDane.
