First off let me explain my definition of...
PUPPY MILL: Mass breeding for money, animals are in kennels and not getting proper affection and sometimes just plain neglected.

BACKYARDBREEDER: Person who has researched the health and care involved with breeding. Then breeds their own personal pets(Registered and healthy of course) so that other families can enjoy and love a purebred without breaking the bank for champion bloodlines.

I consider myself a "byb" and I love my 2 daschunds they sleep in my bed I take them everywhere.I have researched online and talked to my vet about everything I needed to know to have healthy happy dogs and healthy litters.
I was offended when I read comments about how no one should breed a Dog that hasn't won competitions and whatever, because it wasn't benificial to the breed. (I bet Hitler would agree with those people)That was why I chose to call myself "backyardbreeder" because I disagree with breeding for ribbons instead of a lovable pet. After all I didn't have my daughter to flaunt her at pageants (even though I'm know she would win).

I know I will get hated on for this but it won't change the way I feel about it, so go ahead.

I beg to differ... a hobby breeder has only two or three bitches and still shows their dogs. They breed on a much smaller scale than larger show breeders.

As a hobby breeder I never had more than three bitches and never more than one litter on the ground at any time. I only bred a bitch once a year and never more than three times. All my dogs were Ch. because I didn't breed them until they had gotten their Ch title. I used frozen sperm from top studs around the U.S. in hopes of producing the highest quality Puppies I could. My number one goal was to better the breed and produce show quality Puppies. Not to add to the already bloated field of pet quality Puppies and not to make extra money. It was then and is now my opinion that pet quality dogs happen even in the best lines from the best dogs, not all Puppies born are good enough for the ring. Those dogs can fill the need for people who just want a pet quality dog. Without having to use pet quality dogs to produce more pet quality Puppies. Here's the rub and in my opinion why Show breeders are partly to blame for the current problems in the Dog world. They ask to darn much money for their pet quality Puppies. Back in the day breeders made the money they needed to show and breed from the sale of the "show quality" dogs and let the pet quality dogs go at a cheaper price. For what ever reason, many breeders now seem to think their pet quality dogs should also sell for top dollar...because as a breeder they "show" their lines. This is driving otherwise good owners to buy mixes. (You don't pay the price for a Lexus when your getting an Impala.)
Which leaves good purebred pet dogs without homes and fueling the ever growing mix world. People are thumbing their noses at show breeders and basicly saying, Keep your high price pet quality purebred, I'll make my own dog. Sadly this war can only end badly for the dogs. What is the solution? Working to lower cost of showing and getting show breeders to see that everyone wins when price gougeing stops. Theres no place for "greed" in Dog breeding. It is my opinion many people will go back to purebred dogs when it becomes affordable to do it again.

AS ALWAYS This is just MY OPINION.

BACKYARDBREEDER: Person...

No one breeds for ribbons,or trophies, they breed and show because they want to know they are producing dogs that are as close to breed standard as possiable. They are getting rewarded for working their butts off. Show dogs are some of the most pampered dogs on the face of the earth and their handlers and owners love them very much. Many show dogs sleep in bed with their owners or handlers. Running is the show ring is to a show Dog like playing fetch is to a pet dog. Its what they do for fun. dogs who do not enjoy being in the ring do not stay in the ring long. They don't show well because judges can see they don't enjoy it. Have you ever taught your dogs tricks? Or Sit, down, stay? Show breeders just teach their dogs different tricks and the dogs are rewarded very well for their service.

Once your in the show world for a bit you start to make friends with others and your Dog makes friends with their dogs and they get so excited when you get to the show and they see "their" friends. My dogs new when I started getting the show stuff ready they would start to wiggle and bark as if to say "Take me, Take me". I had to take Brutus to every show long after he was done in the show ring because he would get so depressed if I didn't he would not eat. At the show he was a crowd favorite everyone came over and petted him and coo'd over him. He was in doggy heaven. My show friend (a person you only see at shows) had an older Dog Max and he came along for the fun too. Brutus and Max were best buds even though they only saw each other at the shows. When they saw each other they danced.

Its really not fair to sit on the outside and judge until you've been on the inside.

Well if you consider and call yourself a "backyard" breeder with pride that says it all right there!
I still believe you're a hopeless

in three shows, I have almost $350 tied up in, I have reds, yellows, and pink but nothing to show for doing what I do but an empty wallet and hopes to catch those wins so I can feel like I earned the right to breed. On a side not its me not the Dog thats the issue as we are both very new with this and my handling isnt the best but getting better.

I spent years breeding and though I dont feel its right to breed unworthy dogs because of the over population doesnt mean Im on my high horse, its the way I see things and how I feel.

That's with out the expense of a professional handler. It would probably be 2-3x's that.

As I tell people looking to get in to showing Boxers, in our area you need to have 24 dogs and 26 bitches. You need to beat them all for a 3 point major. Second gets NOTHING.

You can have a great dog/bitch that is placing in their class and taking reserves that may never get to be a Champion, because the owner can't afford it, or because they choose for what ever reason not to use a professional handler, in a breed that most people do use professionals.

My problem with the Dog is that she is very insecure and I have not learned how to present her and deal with that at the same time. We are doing handling classes and she is getting better, we competed in a sanction match and took first and best of breed but that doesnt count for points, what was cool as that the Dog that beat her in the real show was there, and she beat him.
Our biggest problem is her holding a stack but its a work in progress, we desided not to do anymore shows until classes where over.

the reason i said that backyardbreeder is a hobby breder as the post says he/she has 2 dachshunds which breed...is there some crime here?? i have not gone back in the archives and investigated this person...i could not call a backyard breeder someone who owns 2 dachshunds which are well loved or so it seems...i certainly wont call them a troll or hopeless or anything else...

i will be the first one to disagree with this statement. i have been on the inside as i have posted many times. yes many many "show" breeders are there for one plain and simple reason. to earn points on their Dog in order to push the price way up into the thousands...even if they have to alter the dogs and compete against themselves. you cannot convince me as i have been to many show kennels where the dogs live just to put it plainly..just as nasty as the puppy mills we all hear so much about. i know one woman who uses 2 different names..1 for show quality akc..and another for ckc dogs which she pipes out to broker in massive numbers...everything in this world is not black and white. i know its easy to think that all is beautiful in the show world...NOT!!! you would be amazed at what really lies behind the scenes....i could go on and on..i wont...bettering the breed by creating clones with horrific genetic issues

Of course there are show people who do bad things. There are people in every walk of life and every profession who do horriable things. Doctors who butcher people, lawyers who fail to defend, judges who look the other way and take bribes, teachers who don't care, cops who do and sell drugs, farmers who sell tainted corn, preachers who lie and take advantage of someone who trusts them, and on an on.

Sometimes on this and other forums I think things are not always read right. Sarcasm is a tough one for me to get some times, and some times I don't think people get when I am getting sarcastic.

I am glad to have as many knowledgeable people on as possible it makes things more interesting.
