We had lots of dogs growing up. Shelties (all managed to get hit by cars) a Saint Bernard and a Rottweiler (we babysat for a year) A terrier Poodle x who is now 14, a bichon-Poodle who was euthanised due to major heart problems. They were fed grocery brand foods like pedigree or purina. Never got table food as far as my parents were concerned! Us kids would give the dogs the food we didnt want under the table! They always got pork chop bones We also had tons of cats, I was famous for finding the strays and hiding them in my room! |

I grew up with shelter mutts and strays. I remember a schnauzer mix, a GSD mix and a lab mix. We did have a champion yellow lab and she was stolen from inside our home(never caught anyone but had strong feelings of who did it). The schnauzer was hit by a car when she got loose from my sister while on a walk, the GSD had to be put down, from what, I do not remember. I don't know about the lab mix as I was very, very little and do not remember much of the Dog but have seen many pictures of myself with her.
We also fed the hamburger patty type food as well as gravy train. Not many Dog food choices when I was growing up. They did get fresh bones from the butcher and quite a few table scraps but those were only fed in ther Dog bowls and NOT from the table (big rule about no Dog being fed from table)

I can remember eukanuba being used and pedigree as far as foods, all got table scraps and meat scraps. Saints and mutts where what I can remember however I was bounced around allot so dont recall much. Up until I started feeding raw I used pro plan and diamond feeds. |

My parents fed Purina puppy chow and then Dog chow. They added raw eggs and table scraps. Since we grew or raised much of what we ate our table scraps were better quality than most of what I buy at the store today to feed my own family. No they did not add supplements. Hip dysplasia was really the only problem our dogs had and not until they were elderly. Back then we thought it was a normal part of ageing.
It is fair to say that we also did not believe and keeping a Dog alive once old age really set in. The belief was its not fair to make them suffer so we don't have to feel the pain of loss. Today it seems people are very shelfish and will do anything to get another day with their pets even when its not really in the best interest of the pet. But thats just my opinion. |

Growing up we had a couple of dogs. We had a GSD that was euth'd due to extreme aggression. I dont know what we fed her.
Muffin was a penkenses (sp) pug mix. She was pretty health. I think she came from a shelter. She was older and died of old age. I dont know what we fed her.
Cleo we had the longest. She was said to be a Doberman/Lab mix. We adopted her from the pound when she was 6 weeks old (or so) and she started on the Hamb/Rice then later was switched to Science Diet. It was what the vet told my mother to feed her. She used to deveope tumors that had to be removed. Cleo deveoped alot of medical problems when she was about 8 years old and had to be put to sleep. Thinking back on the matter now, I think I know what was wrong with her. |
