I know a lot of these websites tell you to check out several breeders and this month a I have had several families 'just looking'.

Which I normally don't have a problem with, people are welcome.

However, the first family that came out, while we are looking at Puppies in my kitchen, it came out that they had RECENTLY been to 4-5 other breeders, of several different breeds because they weren't sure which was right for them.

Internally I freaked out. They were walking in my house with the same shoes, coats that they had walked in to God only knows where. They were handling my Puppies after handling who knows what.

I think I was lucky and my babies were no worse for wear, but it did make me think the next time someone asked to come and 'just look'.

Really, you hate to refuse people, because then it looks like you have something to hide, but I simply asked the people how many other breeders they have recently visited. They said they had appointments with others, but none so far. So I simply asked if I could be the first.

Not a big deal, they were nice people.

I am just wondering other breeders thoughts on this. If there is a way to balance letting people check you out, and not putting your Puppies lives at risk.

I do what I can do, but the Puppies are unvaccinated until 8 weeks so they do NOT have immunity to the big deadly viruses that are out there.

However,...

Oh I hear you. People just looking could just be bored people looking to play with some Puppies. When I was breeding I never let anyone who was just looking come. I explained to them it isn't healthy for the Puppies. Often I was able to tell them sorry they are all sold.

there are "rugs" made for cow barns that are made to disinfect the cattle's feet as they walk in the barn, they look nice and disinfect the peoples feet as they walk through the door, then you ask them to use purell type hand sanitizer, believe me those that should have a Dog will understand your concern.
It is the main reason people dont invite other people over, and is what caused more than one mom and pop pet store to close down.

Here's one for you!
I have a Dog rescue so I get several dogs given to me every day as well as the dogs I buy at the puppy mill auctions. I am very careful about keeping all new dogs in a separate building for 2 weeks, using separate shoes and gowns to cover clothing, gloves for my hands and nets for my hair. I am the only one who goes into isolation. All dogs are vaccinated for dhpp and spayed/ neutered when I receive them.I also have a separate building for adoption dogs. The potentiasl new owner views the Dog from behind glass. they are asked to take their shoes off and put on booties before they enter the adoption area.( Yes, they think I am crazy. )
That said, last week I got a phone call from a lady who adopted 2 dogs, a yorkiepoo puppy and an affenpinscher. She said they had lice and parvo just like her last dog. When I looked at my records, she adopted them 6 WEEKS AGO. They "got over" parvo and she was treating them for lice. BUT, here's the jist of it. When someone comes to adopt a dog, they fill out an application that asks about prior pets. I pulled her ap after I got off the phone and it said SHE HAD NOT HAD A Dog IN THE HOME FOR OVER 3 YEARS! Obviously, she was lying. When I called her back, sher got very defensive and said my ap was intrusive. So, I guess the moral of the story is they are all idiots and need to be put to sleep!... not the dogs, the people. You can never be too careful!

this is the very reason why i neopar my Puppies at 5 weeks of age and vanguard 5plus them at 8 weeks of age..this WILL protect them..from the horrors of what could happen...i do know this to be a fact..and the Puppies will not fall to parvo virus..as far as the other issues as far as paracites..with the hand sanitizer, you will be fine...there is nothing worse than waiting for someone to come, you clean the house, get the paperwork together, wash the Puppies. and they dont show or even call...or..come over and waste 3 hours of your time playing and then say well...will you have another little in 6 mos..we arent ready right now...or...we have to go look at 3 more breeders homes...or worse like you said..have already been there..if you would like to discuss the vaccine program i use..i would be glad to give it to you and explain to you why i know this method is foolproof...you will no longer have to worry about who is comming and who is not...this does not mean that still someone cannot bring something in on their feet, however..isolate them to one room with a washable floor...and spray the ground behind them when they leave with parvolan spray...this can be used on everything where as bleach cannot...

I also give neopar at 5 weeks and a 4 way at 8 weeks right before they go to new homes.

That's because last spring a puppy family DID bring Parvo in to my home, which I had never dealt with in my life. I hadn't been to any Dog shows, I was very careful at the vet, no visitors other than puppy families and then all of a sudden my Puppies were sick. That had to be it. There was no other outside sources.

It made for about 6-8 weeks of pure hell in my life until I figured out how to deal with the virus, and thank God I only lost 2 Puppies.-before they were diagnosed, and I know enough vet stuff that I successfully treated the rest at home. Or it could have been much much worse emotionally and financially.

With Neopar I don't worry 'too much' about Parvo, though it is always in the back of my mind. I don't let people handle the very tiny babies for that reason. They can look but not touch.

But what about the influenza, distemper and hepatitis that is in the vaccine they get at 8 weeks? Are those viruses something they can get from people/visitors? I mean, they are prevalent enough that we have to vaccinate for them.

i know it may not be exactly "kosher" but when i had contacted my breeder about getting a pup i did make an appt to look.although what little info i had on him was good i decided to make an unannounced visit to see if he was avalible to talk to me and see the conditions of where the pups were raised.he was a little surprised that i did that but when i explained why ,he was actually pleased.he said that i was showing concern for my future baby and he thought that was good.by doing that i was actually able to meet my little girl and bond with her a little sooner, which he thought was a good idea.i know not all situations are like that and i respect every breeders reasons on here for be concerned.i just wanted to voice my opinion.thank you

Lol, as I have said before people are taking a risk if they don't call ahead. You are more than welcome to stop by, but if we are not home it was a wasted trip. If I am going to be gone more than 15 minutes at a time I put them all inside the house.

We have a problem with meth heads in our County. They steal dogs to sell, or to try to get rewards for, or the worst for Dog fighting.

Not to mention I wouldn't want them left outside in case they got hurt or something.

Most of the families that purchase from me are NOT local. Most come from Detroit or Chicago which is a solid 2 hours either way, so it is a pretty big risk to drive out and cross your fingers that we are home.

And as Moggie said it is also REALLY RUDE to make an appointment with a breeder and then no call no show. We do have lives and other things we can be doing. I don't really care of you come out or not, just let me know so I am stuck waiting for hours, not knowing if someone is just running late, or lost.

as i said i did make an appt and i did keep it.my breeder is only about 1/2 hr from (my good luck) me so making an unannounced visit wasn't really a hardship.

Oh, no I didn't mean to accuse you of anything. I was making a side comment agreeing with (him/her) that it is just a crappy inconvenience when people no-call/no-show.

i didn't think you were because you seem to be one of the more level headed people.but yes i can imagine the inconvenience of waiting for someone and then having them not show up.kind of like waiting for the cable guy " i'll be there sometime between 12-5" .by the way where are you located and what kind of Dog do you breed? just curious.

beaglebrat..you can also give a straight distemper vaccine around 4 to 5 wks of age ...the neopar at 5 weeks and your normal follow up..as i said im using vanguard5 plus..but im hearing awfully good things about galaxy....as far as the other things such as parainfluenza...hepatitis..yes the Puppies can catch it but it would be a slim chance...even so..it clearly would not be near as devistation as parvo virus or distemper...

Oh well that is a can of worms. My primary breed is and will always be Boxers. I have raised them for about 12 years.

I also raised Pugs for about 6 years, before I got out of Pugs and 2.5 years ago started raising a few Puggles (Gasp!).

I also have 2 Yorkies mother/son. The mother is 3 years old and I bred her one time about a year and a half ago and kept the little guy from the litter.

I also have one spoiled rotten Shih Tzu.

Eventually I would like to have a few less of the Boxers and a few more of either the Shih Tzu's or the Yorkies, but I am still trying to decide which small breed I like better. I really like them equal, but they are very different.

We live in Southern Michigan in between Detroit and Chicago.

maligirl...im sure you will think this as a rude remark...and im sorry if you do as it is not meant to be this way...had you had an appointment at my house at a certain time..and chose to show up unexpected on a surprise visit...i would have met you at the door and asked you not to let it hit you in the butt on your way out...if you werent responsible enough to show up when expected...you werent responsible enough to own one of my Puppies...let me explain...breeding and Dog ownership is a 24/7 job...not 8hrs per day...there is no schedule..a breeder is sometimes up all night with that one puppy in need..there is feeding..watering...cleaning...disenfecti...bottle feeding..grooming...bathing. nails to clip..ears to clean..shots to give...worming to do...medicating...along with paperwork..vetting...regular household chores...cleaning...cooking..errands..groceries...etc..and finally spending time with potential owners...it is a huge job and there are never ever enough hours in a day...there is nothing worse than a nosey rosey...who shows up unannounced to find you in your nightgown still cleaning and feeding...when if they handt been a nosey rosey....the daily plans would have allowed for all the work to be done in order to free up time for your visit...like getting the Puppies bathed and ready to be shown...the house straightened up and the paperwork laid out and the time slot readied to be open to spend time with you...i will NOT show a puppy until i have completed my workload for the day...the care of the dogs and Puppies is far more important to me than showing the Puppies...what if this breeder was in a pinch to get her work done in order for a vet appointment that she then had to cancel due to your unannounced change of plans?? this is just plain RUDE!!! the way i feel about it...if you could not trust me enough to keep our regular appointment ...you are more than welcome to go elsewhere...
you should have already checked references...called my vet...and if you cannot judge the quality and health of the Puppies being shown and the parents on premisis..you havent done enough homework.....

if you had bothered to read my entire ist post you would have seen that i agreed with the way all of you do things.as i have mentioned i did make an appt and i did show up at that time.also as i mentioned when i showed unannounced he could have sent me home sure, but he didn't.and maybe you don't think i would be able to have one of your pups i'm sorry you feel that way.i do know that breeding is a 24hr job.and as i also mentioned i couldn't find out very much info my breeder but i did have an address.just because i did show up doesn't mean i'm rude.

i have to disagree...it was rude and it was the act of a nosey rosey and totally a preplanned and preconcocted(new word for me) act on your part...you had to speak with this breeder on the phone to make an appointment...you should have asked him for the name and phone number of his vet for a reference and for a couple of previous buyers for references...and you should have checked them out..done your homework on how to choose a puppy and kept you regular scheduled appointment..nothing you can say will change my attitude with this...sorry!!!

ok fine you disagree.nothing i can do will change your mind, again fine.i did do my homework, checked out his vet, tried to get references(very few availible).but i couldn't get anybody that would/could let me know (from personal experience) how the pups were kept, where and how the house cleaning was.i thought this was the best way to go about it so he couldn't "spruce" things up for my visit.everybody makes mistakes and i guess you feel i did.so let's just agree to disagree
