My friend just called me to tell me she is buying another Husky AKC Reg'd, She just got Daisy like 2 months ago from the same breeder, now she is getting Duke from the same breeder in mid april. He is also a husky, she says she is going to breed them, that the have the same father but different mothers, and b/c of that it is ok to breed them. Is this true. I think she is crazy, she is great with her animals, but breeding? Any opinions or advice, all though I not it won't make a difference to her. Also she said that it is better to have 2 Puppies. than one, that they behave ad train better when there are two? Confused! Stacey |

It is true that there is a thing called line breeding that is done by professional breeders and should only be done by them. You can enhance and better a breed or destroy it if you dont know what you are doing, and even then mother nature can play tricks on you. It takes knowing every dogs issues in the bloodline as when you breed them so close, you double up on genes and those can be good or bad that get doubled and some pretty nasty defects can result in doing it without being educated. Ill send you the laws of line breeding, if others would like it, I can post upon request but its a long boring hard to follow thing for most people.
By what is stated alone I can tell you in my opinion neither her or the breeder know enough about doing this and you will see why if you read what Im about to send to you, send it to her and maybe she can see why this isnt such a good idea.
As far as two pups, Ill let it be at twice the poop, chewed up things, pee, puke, training and then at the end they are more bonded to each other than the humans in the house and form their own pack. Not saying it cant be done, but its not the best idea in the world and is a ton of work. I feel that one puppy deserves all the time in love it can get to grow into the best Dog possible. Huskies especially are allot of Dog to be raising two at a time. |

I am not saying that getting two Puppies won't work, but from my experience they do not train better. And actually a lot of SPCAs will not adopt two or more Puppies to the same person/family (especially if they are littermates) They tend to mature with behavioural problems and will bond to each other as mentioned above. |

Here are two articles on the two Puppies at one time issue: http://www.doglistener.co.uk/choosing/siblings.shtml http://www.caninedevelopment.com/Sibling.htm
It really is not to be recommended.
As for line breeding, as others have said, yes, sometimes it is done for particular reasons. But it doesn't sound like your friend knows what those reasons are. You don't do it just because someone tells you can.
Speaking from personal experience, the closest line breeding I did resulted in a lot of the Puppies later acquiring cancer. It's too bad that a lesson like that has to come via grieving owners. Even when you think you know the possible dangers and benefits of a particular line breeding, things like my example can occur. |

Thank you!!! Great Links!!
To OP Sounds like your friend has been working with the breeder who may be mentoring her. However if that is true I'm disappointed that any breeder would start a newbie out with inline breeding. :(
As for having two Puppies. I have often spoke out against this in the past. It is my opinion that.... In most cases the purchasing of two Puppies at the same time is an impulse buy. People see all the Puppies together and can't pick or a couple thinks they can "each" have one, or they will give one to each of their children or they mistakenly think one is good two will be better. Sadly it rarely works out well for the dogs. In many cases both dogs end up being abandoned or rehomed.
