I have two Labs, male 6 years and female 1 year. She entered her heat cycle a week ago and we obviously are keeping them well separated. We do plan on breeding them in her third cycle and want to safely keep them apart during her first two cycles. How do we know when she is finished and is safe to let them back together. |

I really don't think you are any where near being ready to breed.
it is advisable to have a mentor & have participated in a couple breedings & whelpings before you go it on your own.
do you plan to have the hip & eye certs done?
are you aware that labs are highly over bred & killed in shelters in huge numbers? if yours had come from an ethical breeder, they would have gotten them on a limited registry, which means you can't breed them.
here is some info that may help you understand what you will be dealing with

Suebgone, thank you for reply, however you answered questions that weren't required or asked for. The question was: when do we know she is complete with her cycle and safe to put the male and female back together again. |

You should keep them apart 4 weeks. They cycle for about 3 weeks, but I never allowed my dames anywhere near my studs unil four weeks. Its always better to be safe than sorry. |

i agree with mao. i have a lab and she's done in 3 weeks but last time she went into heat it seemed like it was a few days longer or maybe it was just me being paranoid. but definately keep them apart for atleast 4 weeks. oh yeah, ya know everyone is so against breeding unless they are a breeder. everyone needs to stop saying oh fix your Dog because you shouldn't breed, you aren't responsible enough to breed, blah blah blah. you can't even begin to understand a person and how they are and how they would be as a breeder in a short paragraph. not everyone wants to adopt a Dog when they don't know what they've been through and where they've been. it's really annoying. i personally want a Dog that i can raise to be around my family from the time they are a puppy. |

OMG, well said to the person above me. Sometimes people don't want the problems of another person, they want a new puppy with no friggin' issues! I agree that u can not tell who a person is in one short paragraph, if u really want to educate them or tell if they are good, ask their phone number ir email and get to know them. Everyone here needs to remember this is a forum for discussions, not just established breeders! |
