Quote beaglebrat: I will get in to my situation that soured me on co-ownerships and show contracts.

I purchased a 10 week old puppy with every intention of SHOWING HER MYSELF. The breeders left their names on as co-owner....

Im trying to understand, BB you know Im new to this, but It cost $23 at most to enter a show, if your Dog is great then I cant imagine why it would take 10,000 to finish a dog, unless there is not allot of local shows like there is here. And personally from what I seen at the last show I was at, Ill never have some one else handle one of my dogs unless I can stick my foot up their butts when they dont do right.
If the handler doesnt bond with the dog, is just doing it for a job not the love of it then that passes onto the dog, the - energy goes strait down the lead and the Dog does start to hate the ring. I seen so called pros stacking from the inside, not stacking at all, dumping dogs off to run to the next ring ect, even seen one guy hitting a newfie for acting like a puppy and it was all i could do not to say something, if i had been on better turf I would have set his butt strait.
BB, if you think this Dog can win, email me and if you pay the entry Ill handle her for free, heck im going there anyway might as well bounce my chunky butt all over the place.

Well, it is $23 to enter a Dog show, but here is an AVERAGE (NOT GREAT) handlers fees directly off their website.

$60 per show, $70 per specialies
Nationals $125
Futurity $50
$10 Board per day
Expenses (Gas, tolls, RV parking, Motels, food per day) are shared by the number of clients.

So if you have a Dog going on a 5 week circuit (like mine did) you have 5 weekends of showing 3 days each (15x 60= $900)plus 2 futurities ($50x 2= $100), plus board for the entire 5 weeks ($10x 35= $350) plus the entry fees ($23x 15= $345) you are already up to $1695 for 15 shows,

AND that is NOT including the 'expenses' which most handlers go all over a region from MI, OH, TENN, FL, MO-- when some one else is footing the bill gas price isn't a problem-- handlers are hunting for major shows. The gas alone from their RV's, their camping expenses (a few hundred a show) will KILL you too.

All for 15 shows, that your Dog may not get a single point in! It takes 24 dogs and 26 bitches to compete for the day just to get a 3 point major in our region. As I said, do the math, my Dog was on several 'circuits' like this in over 46 shows and not a point. You see how it can be THOUSANDS, and you are NOT guaranteed to get anything.

Quote beaglebrat: Oh, don't worry, I don't feel bad about what I do, how I started or anything else about my breeding program. I am very content.

I don't think that all dogs being bred need to be show dogs. I wouldn't...

If anyone ever has a question of why I will handle my own dogs in the future that will be it. Im sorry that your handler did such a lousy job, and I feel you got the wrong end of the stick or the dogs gotta be really faulted some where to not have pointed in at least one of all those shows, and though I dont know you well, I think I know you well enough that you would have not sent the Dog out there if you didnt feel she could win.

She got second in her 12-18 month class out of 36 bitches in her class at NATIONALS, and she placed 4th in the futurity at nationals BEATING 3 FINISHED Champions. If that tells you anything, yet not a point.

With her, she is 3.5 years right now, I really have no desire to finish her, because I am in such a feud with her breeders that even if I finished her I don't think they would sign off on the papers and allow me to breed her, so I am focusing on other dogs that I have bred.

I am actually doing pretty well in UKC, practicing showing, becoming less nervous, I have actually had friends that want me to handle their dogs. I just have to gain confidence in myself.

A friend of mine was telling me how expensive it was to have a Dog with a handler. Easily $1K a month. But she has a great relationship with her handler and her Dog loves him. I think the hardest part for her is missing her dog.

Had you given thought to using a different handler? A Dog really has to love it's handler in order to perform well.

I had thought of using a different handler and the breeder thought that was unacceptable. I often wondered if they were getting some sort of discount for having multiple dogs with this handler, and they were making me use her.

The Dog we are talking about though is a one person dog, and I am that person. She is my hemorrhoid and she gets a moapy look on her face when anyone else takes her. She does just fine for me.

I finished her UKC title last month in a weekend placing in the Guardian Group every time.

Back when I quit showing her AKC with the handler, I told them that I would show her and try to get a few single points and maybe after that my husband would allow the Dog to go with a handler again.

The breeder told me not to bother, it was a handler breed and it would be a waste of my time and money. So, I gave up.

Keep in mind that I am reasonably young and have shown horses (halter too) all my life.

I am on a show e-mail list, and I DON'T believe that I could get major points. I see the results every weekend and only about 10-20% of the winners are ever owner handled and getting majors-- but I think I could hold my own handling at smaller shows which I intend to do this year.
