Finally, My mom and me have agreed on getting another Dog this summer.. Since I will be here this summer I will be able to provide tons of excercise ( I love to walk and jog a couple of miles), play with the dog, train the Dog and feed the Dog plus socializing to avoid aggression.

I have taken breed selector quizes and I have came up with the same breeds over and over again. Most of them were Mollosser breeds. On the list below, i will show you what the quiz came up with...

All Mastiff breeds
Rottweiler
APBT ( American Pit Bull Terrier )
Olde English Bulldogge
English Bulldog
Staffordshire Bull Terrier
American Staffordshire Terrier
Black Russian Cur Dog ?
Original Old English Bulldogge

But what im really interested in is the Rottweiler and Staffy Bull since I know more about them than any other breed on the list.

So would a Rottweiler or a Staffordshire Bull Terrier be ok in an apartment ? Training classes and socialization is practically on top priority list. I know Rotts need tons of excercise, but im committed to walking the Dog for about an 1 hour and 30 minutes...Same for the Staffordshire Bull Terrier. I know its not Ideal but PLEASE! NO SMALL dogs !! Bad experience with small dogs !

Im also interested in the Dogue De Bordeaux. I am most certainly interested in this breed because it is great with the family and a great family protector..

First, most apartment complexes will not allow those breeds so you may want to check on that before going much further, weight limit and pet deposits are also things you need to be aware of.

Summer last only two months for most kids, so if you get a puppy at say 8 weeks, by the time school starts again is when the puppy will just hit when it will start needing the most exercise, yet will not be able to be alone 8 hours a day so take that into consideration as well.

I really would look into an older Dog 1 or 2 years of age if not a little older so that it can handle being alone for longer periods of time.

You are pretty well spoken, so I also have to ask what will happen to the Dog when you go off to college or move on with life? In other words your mom should want the breed and Dog also as most get left home with parents as the kid flees the nest.

do research on the breeds via google, learn how to spot a good breeder or rescuer if you have a solid plan as it is a life long commitment.

Summer...

Yes. Our apartment allows all breeds including Rotts, APBT's , Chows ( I had one when i wasnt living in an apartment ) , GSD's and Dobermans and Mastiff breeds. No weight limits or restrictions. Alot of apartments in my city dont even have restrictions or weight limits. The ones that do have restrictions or weight limits are the ones that are " Exsclusive" meaning gated apartments or very very fancy ones that cost up to $1000 a month. This is what it is in my city.
Plus, If I do go off to college ( Which probably most likely wont happen), I'll take the Dog w/ me. And if I cant take the Dog with me, I'll ask my mom to take of the dog. Honestly, Im not that type of kid that would just bail and leave my mom to do all the work. In the past 9 years, ive been taking care of dogs with the help of my grandma. My cousin would not do anything even when it was his dog. I'd always walk the dog, feed the dog, wash the dog, train the Dog so i think i know what im getting into..

Im surprised if you live in the city you can find a apartment for less than a 1000 a month, even my little hillbilly town they start at 950 for a one bed room.

If you get a pit, try to make it a rescue, there one of the number one breeds put down at the shelters.
You need to find a good breeder that will tell you the good and bad of the breeds.
Most Rott people get them and think they can make them aviod their nature, they are guard dogs to the bone, a wonderful breed but one that takes special consideration.

Danes are a great breed, a bit of a handful as pups but mellow out and are really great dogs, once again a good breeder that does health testing is a must.
American bulldogs are another breed that comes to mind, however like pits have a high prey drive.
American German shepherd, labs, standard poodles (i know probably to girly for you but are great dogs), greyhounds, are just a few others that come into mind, Id really have to say apartment life for a rott isnt the best idea even though it can be done.

LOL.... I had to respond to the Standard Poodle being girly..... they are actually a very well kept secret in the Dog world. They may have fluffy, curly hair but there is a major Dog in there. SPoo's are actually the original water retriever plus they have a herding instinct and can excel in any Dog performance sport. I have a 5 month old S'Poo puppy and he is a lot of Dog already. he loves everyone and is smarter than any Dog I've ever met. Gotta love'em! There aren't that many in rescue though and it can be hard to find a good breeder (S'Poo Puppies from good breeders can also be very expensive)

For apartment living though... Greyhounds are awesome. They are docile in the house but are willing to get up and go and do anything with you. There are thousands and thousands that need homes and each one is sweet and loving. You just don't get a lot of the potential temperament issues that you might get with some of the other breeds. There is something extra special about them. The only major requirement is that they can never be offleash no matter what. You can't beat a greyhound for apartment living. (in my opinion there are few breeds as wonderful as a grey anyway... Standard Poodles or GSD's maybe.... maybe.)

There are a lot of cheap apartments where i live. I used to live in austin and paid 700 for a 1 bed/1 study.
Most 1/1 start about 650 and up. Apartment pricing usually goes up and down. So it all depends on what time of the year you start searching.

what i'm surprised to hear is that a apartment will allow a rottie or even a staff terrier. A lot of apartments are very strict about breed..esp bully breeds.

For the op:
you may want to know that if you do own one of those breeds and your mother decides to find a new place it maybe harder to find another apartment that will allow the breed of your choice. So you may want to take that into consideration.

Bad News : When my Mom looked at our lease, it turned out that they do NOT allow pit bulls or Rottweilers . I was feeling kinda edgy about the entire thing, so that eliminates 5 breeds because pit bull type dogs are APBT, Am Staff and Staffy Bull .

Sorry to hear that, its hard when those breeds are black listed because some idiots wanted to turn them bad.
American bulldogs and old English bulldogies (not the UGA mascot type) i may not be even spelling that right are types of bulldogs that still have a tougher look but not black listed normally

im not surprised that your apartment complex would not allow these types of dogs..the insurance requirement is too high for the landlords to want to cover these breeds..i do think that one or more of the other breeds you mentioned fall within this category also..i would certainly NOT allow any large breed Dog in my apartment complex for the following reasons..there are responsible Dog owners out there who will properly care for their dog, however immature Dog owners who bring in a large breed puppy are not just bad...but really bad..a large breed puppy can downright destroy an apartment in no time or less without the proper care and diligent instruction...why would any landlord take a chance like this one?? they probably wouldnt..i cannot imagine an apartment complex with a rott or pitt in every apartment...imagine that...i do agree that the reputations of these wonderful dogs have been ruined by several of the types of owners who should not have been allowed to own any dog..and this is sad.. i am a true rott lover and have no fear of a pit...i just dont think they belong in an apartment...i would like to know why joeyPoodle says that standard poodles cannot be off a leash????

being a former rental property owner, I have to say I can deal with large dogs better than small ones in a personal preference, however I was very picky about the dogs I let in and no one was to have a puppy without prior approval, just one step too many for most land lords. I did find that the big dogs didnt leave pee smells and stains that sunk into the subfloor, id rather plant more grass or patch a wall than to have to tear up carpet and sub floor just to get the smell out, we even tiled all the houses and apartments after a few little dogs.

i cannot understand this...is there some difference in the smell of urine of toy breed versus large breed dogs?? there surely is a huge huge difference in amounts of urine and feces...little dogs can be trined to wee wee pads..easily...what i was referring to was this...i have a girlfriend who thought she could leave her dalmation home alone with the run of the house after training and obedience...wrong...she came home to her brand new house and the sheetrock was eaten completely leaving one corner open...the leg on her new diningroom table was eaten...i left my standard Poodle alone for the fist time with the run of the house and when i came home all was well...i was satisfied that she was over her puppy behavior...the second day...OMG!!!!!!!!!!!!! my entire home was trashed!!!! this is why i wonder why landlords would take such a chance when they dont have to...

Moggie : From personal experiences, I would never leave a super high energy like a dalmatian alone with nothing to do. Thats why its soo hard to keep these dogs in an apartment or a house without a yard ( fenced in ). They're a working breed and honestly, they should'nt be kept in small housing or houses without yards. But some people have successfully kept a Dog like the dalmatian in an apartment, but for me, i would never try it.

Sadly, i wasnt suprised this was going to happen. But im still pissed off because a GSD is capable of doing harm too. And the Dog on the backside of us is more than likely aggressive because he doesnt socialize with people or other dogs. Why take a chance with a Dog like that ? knowing it has the capability of attacking someone. The breed isnt bad, its just that keeping it locked up in a apartment only taking outside for bathroom really does say " profencity to be aggressive " all over it.

But, that doesnt mean I'm through researching about other breeds in general. Now im interested in the ...

Dogue De Bordeaux
Olde English Bulldogge
French Bulldog
American Bulldog (Im not sure if it would be considered a pit bull type Dog in an apartment)
Neo Mastiff
and a bunch of others..

I just dont want something small..

Not to be rude or anything... But what hillbilly town did you live in that started a one bedroom at 950?? I live in a town of 35,000 and a three bedroom two bath runs you 650.

I'm just saying that comment was unneccessary.

From what I know it's not really a difference in the smell, but the amount they'll have accident. My little Dog gets the pad thing, but just doesn't always make it. However, my lab will seriously hold it till her bladder explodes (not literally). From my experience large dogs are much better about pottying (I'm not saying it's fact, I'm just saying from my experience).
