My Boxer puppy wasn't crate trained by the breeder and I am not sure about it. I have been taking him out at night and he is doing very well house training. Right now he is little, but he will be getting quite large (65-80lbs) I was told, I don't want to have to buy to crates and I am home all the time other than grocery shopping so I really have no need to put him in one I believe. Does anyone have any advice to offer on this? Is crate training the smarter way to go?
Thanks Stacey ( Sparky's Mommy)

Crate training is a personal choice. It works well for some and not for others. There are very strong opinions on both sides of this issue.

I support crate training with my dogs. I think it is a great idea.

Just because your breeder didnt crate train your puppy doesnt mean you cant.

I started crating one of my dogs when he was two years old. He has done great with the crating. It is a safe environment for my dogs.

I would strongly suggest crate training, and start as early as possible. When I got my first two dogs, they were small so I saw no need to crate train. Soon after we lost our house to skunks, I found out I was pregnant, no none would rent to us with two dogs, I had to live with my dad and my husband with his mom, I had to take my dogs to work with me...in a kennel, they hated it, they had no idea what was going on and they were terrified. This was 2 yrs ago and I am still struggling to get control of my Chihuahua and dashchund. They still howl in the kennel, one barks uncontrollably and one pees everywhere as soon as she gets nervous or scared. Also, my dashchund was recently diagnosed with degenerative disc disease, surgery is not an option so she was to be in her crate 24/7 for 3 to 6 weeks, because she hates it so much she tore up her snout making it bleed everywhere, she got her foot stuck somehow and almost broke her leg and she stopped eating because she got so depressed. We had no choice but to take her out, risking her going completely paralysed. I know these things probably won't happen to you!! but I never anticipated any future reason to crate train my dogs and it is an ongoing problem and probably always will be.

Crate training is wrong. I do not believe in putting dogs in ctaes. Do not put her in a crate. To me that is cruelty.

Because you disagree does not make it wrong.

Additionally crating a Dog does not constitue abuse. I advise you to call your local city, county or state runs facilites to get your facts straight.

I'm sorry I know everyone is entitled to their own opinion but in some situations NOT crating your Dog is cruel. A couple years ago, my friend took her pom and yorkie out of town and her car broke down. It was one of the hottest days, She put the yorkie in the crate and down in the tall grass in case someone hit the car (until a tow truck came) Instead of putting her pom in the crate as well (because he whined), she held him. He ending up dying because he got so hot - and she was giving them both lots of water.

Use of restraint in your vehicle is a great idea as well. a Dog sitting in a seat can be thrown thru a windsheild if there is a collision.

Additionally when exiting the car a Dog can slip out and get hit by a car.

Putting your Dog in a travel carrier can prevent that from occurring.

crate training works well because dogs like to have a safe place to themselves you don't have to LOCK them in tho, if you don;t agree with it you could always puppy proof a room or make a play pen safe aera for your puppy so you can have a little free time and not have to constantly supervise the little one, Would you let a a toddler run around the house unsupervised? of course not and a puppy is like a toddler, so do what you feel is best but i wouldn't recommend leaving him unsupervised running free in the house where he could possibly chew on wires or something dangerous

Thank you everyone for your thoughts, after Sparky decided he wanted to sleep downstairs on the couch, and then go potty in the house whereever and whenever, I decided to get a crate for him to sleep in at night. He cries for a few minutes at night but we all aregetting used to it and he is getting used to his "home". The best part is I dont wake up to poop in the house on my brand new carpet! Yeah
Thanks for all your advice!
