5 month old Bichon poos in his bed (I thought dogs never did that). He has done it in his crate and on his free bed. He loves his crate and goes in it to nap by himself. He sleeps in it at night fine in our bedroom. Leave him alone for 5 minutes and there is crap all over the place. Lemme see, there is crap in his bed (usually the biggest pieces), there is crap on the floor (he then walks in it and jumps in it), then there is crap on the walls (because he just walked and jumped in it), and then there is crap on the door (because he seems to be trying to get out but of course he's just walked and jumped in the crap and so spreads it). So all in we can't really use the kitchen any more because of all the crap everywhere. We dunno what to do next. Help! |

You are not alone. I also have trouble potty training my dog. Look under "How do you potty train an adult dog" and I am sure that you will find some advice. I don't know what to do either but have you ever heard of doggy diapers? I just heard of them myself and I just want to know if they are really real. |

is this Dog on a set schedule? do you TAKE him out about 15 minutes after he eats? no playing while he is out - you are on a mission,
he should not have the run of the house until he is reliably house broken & he is very young to expect perfection. |

Yes, doggy diapers are very real but there is no guarantee the Dog will not poop in them. Imagine cleaning that.
Like Sue said, the Dog needs to be on a schedule. When you take him/her out to poop/pee, make sure that is all they are there to do, no playing. |

Are you sure the crate you are using is small enough? I have never had a Dog poop in a crate more than once.
I would put your pup in an x pen when you can't watch thier every movement. Put a piece of vinyl flooring remnant (cheap from home improvement store) under it. This will give you a completely washable area. Use a cleaner especially made for dogs not to smell thier own waste found at any petstore.
Don't give him a bed until he is trained. Use a catch phrase like "do your business" when you take him out to potty. In your case I would give him a small treat and lots of praise every time he goes outside. Buy or check out at the library, books on potty training Puppies.
The one time my yorkie ever went poop with a diaper on, it came out nice and clean through the tail hole and didn't even dirty the diaper. |

Sounds to me like he has a separation anxiety issue. Many dogs deficate when they are upset. You may need to talk with a Dog behaviorist. If you don't have one where you live, look for one on the net.
Did you buy this pup from a pet store by chance? |

wow. lots of good replies.
I do take him out regularly and right after meals and he does do his business and gets a treat. The crate is the right size and he sleeps in it fine in our bedroom but when we tried it downstairs - well I already described it. We got him from a breeder who has lots of Bichons and we saw the parents and siblings etc.
I agree that he has a separation problem but no idea what to do.
p.s. My wife thought about the diapers but your comment about "right out the side" was a) very funny (probably not to you though) and b) what I told her would happen.
I think we may just have to send this one off for scientific research... |

Your pup is still very young so give it time and try not to get frustrated. Don't give him a chance for failure. Don't give him free roam of the house. It was hard to keep my Pom in an xpen at all times when I couldn't watch him but it was well worth it now that he is 100% trained and had very few accidents after 6 months old. You could also keep him on a leash tethered to you around the house this shows them who is alpha. You could try getting a bell to put on the door and teach him to paw it each time you go out. Good luck |

No one has asked the question, Where did you get this dog? Did it come from a pet store or a breeder who used wire mess cages that allowed the pee and poop to fall through the bottom of the cage? Many of these dogs never take to crate training because they were trained early to sleep where they poop.
Your Dog is not dumb or even all that unusual.
An x-pen will be a better choice for the dog. In the begining cover the whole floor with pads except where you put his bed. The bed and be a couple of bath towels. If he soils them pick them up and clean them right away. Keep the soild area as clean as you can. In time he will learn he wants to potty away from where he sleeps. As he get better you can slowly take away all the papers. Of course you should be taking him outside every thirty minutes and when he wakes and after he eats just as you would do in crate training. Your covering the floor for easy clean ups. Don't scold or punish the Dog for potting in the x-pen, next time watch him closer. As soon as you learn YOU SCREWED UP and not the Dog the sooner your Dog will be trained. House training a Dog is in the begining 97% training the human and 3% training the dog. Once the human is trained the Dog will fall in line. |

Thank you, I missed that.
The breeder of "lots" of Bichons may not have been able to keep the whelping box or puppy boxes as clean as they needed to be and the Dog may have learned to sleep where he pottied. I've seen breeders who keep their pups in small pens with wire mesh bottoms. |
