Hello! Wondering if anybody can offer their advice...my Dog just today, started having this stuff leak out of his butt. It is just a little bit at a time, but it is really smelly and I am assuming it is his anal glands leaking, but he has not other symptoms...he is not scooting, licking, he doesn't seem to be irritated or in pain at all. He is 2 1/2 years old and has never had a problem with them before. He is on a good diet, Innova kibble and Natures Variety raw and his poop is normal and has not been runny at all.
I am going to make him a vet appointment tomorrow to have it checked out, but wanted to know if this is a huge problem. And since they have never been expressed or needed to be expressed before are his glands always going to need to be maintained since he is now having a problem with them?
I also have seen on the internet that if your Dog has anal gland problems you should give them a couple of pitted prunes every day or few days. Has anybody tried this and is feeding my Dog prunes safe? I know they can not have raisins and prunes seem very similar to me.
Thanks in advance for any help! |

Have your vet express his anals. It is not a huge problems for most dogs but some need to have it done once a month or so. They can get infected and may need treatment if that is the caase. If you take your Dog to a groomer, they should do this as part of regular grooming. |

my dogs had been on California Natural for a long time & for some reason that I still don't understand, I switched them to Innova.
their stools got so hard & dry that my one started having anal gland problems. we went back to CN pronto.
yes, the problem has continued.
the vets seem to do a better job than the groomers because they will get them from the inside, groomer usually don't |

ok, he went in to the vet today and his left gland was a little bit inflamed and needed to be expressed. She expressed his glands, and syringed in some antibiotics and an anti inflammatory cream. She said just to keep an eye out and make sure everything is back to normal.
He has been on innova for over a year now and it has never caused any problems. plus his stools are always very normal so i am doubting it is the food, i think he does pretty good on the innova.
can the anal gland problem be caused by him not going poop as often as he used to? I started my second degree at the beginning of january and my schedule is different now and sometimes in the morning he will not poo b/c i only leave myself about 5-10 mins to take him out. Used to he would always go poo first thing in the morning.
If that is a possible cause i can definitely get up earlier to make sure he gets to always go poo in the morning. I definitely wish i had thought to ask the vet about that, but will call later and ask.
Thanks everyone! |

You may need to add more fiber to his diet. My vet has us give our Dog fiber crackers as a treat to make her stools larger. The larger stool helps express the glands naturally. Talk with your vet on how much to give. |

Its a bit hard on a Dog to do raw and kibble both because of the digestive rates differ, not that it might have much to do with your problem. The reason im not a fan of innova in general is the really high protein rates that have seemingly constipated every Dog I have used it on. I really think if you just feed one or the other the problem would get better.
But by all means use pumkin as a fiber not prunes. Its not hard to express the glads yourself, but theres a fine balance in doing it too much and not enough as the more you do it, the more the body will produce. With my experience as a groomer if its not a chronic problem, you may never have it again and it was just one of those once in a while things to just a once thing.

I used to work as a veterinary technician and I can tell you that MOST indoor dogs have issues with impacted anal glands. This is mainly because an outdoor Dog expresses their glands when they "poop" to mark their territory. Indoor dogs have no need to do this so their glands become impacted more.Have your vet or a technician show you how to do this at home. It is fairly easy to do and will save you money in the long run. |
