here are the main ingredients in Wellness lamb & rice
Lamb, Menhaden Fish Meal, Oatmeal, Ground Barley, Ground Brown Rice, Rice Bran (from brown rice), Rye Flour, Canola Oil (preserved with mixed tocopherols, a natural source of vitamin E), Salmon Meal, Tomatoes (natural source of lycopene), Ground Millet, Natural Lamb Flavor, Carrots, Apples, Spinach, Blueberries, Sweet Potatoes, Flaxseed, Potassium Chloride, Dicalcium Phosphate, Calcium Carbonate.
since the lamb is not "lamb meal" it is about 70% water. the total left means it is way down the line in weight in the food. it is primarily fish & fillers.
fish meal by law must be preserved in ethoxyquin. |

Ingredients in Dog foods sometimes are hard to read because as Sue mentioned fish meal by US standards must be preserved by ethoxyquin. The consumer needs to be vigilant because whats alarming is it probably doesn't list this preservative on the Dog food packaging because the preservative was added by the renderer and not the actual Dog food company that sells it. If chemicals are put in prior the company that sells the food doesn't need to list it as their ingredient. Its a crap shoot to feed your Dog healthy. If you feed kibble the only really safe way to go if you can budget is kibble that has the USDA Organic stamp of approval on the bag. If it doesn't have the USDA stamp its not organic. If a bag of Dog food says organic and does not have the USDA stamp Organic then its not. Just a little loop hold pet food companies do as a marketing ploy. Hope this helps

dog food does not have to be organic to be an excellent food.
holistic foods are every bit as healthy IMO & as such would not need nor have the USDA stamp |

As I mentioned organic is far more superior. I'd rather buy organic chicken which is hormone free than regular chicken - especially beef now with all the horror stories of tainted beef in schools and recalls from supermarkets. If they are dishing this crap out for humans in grocery stores just think whats going into Dog food including holistic brand. If you can't afford the USDA stamp then of course holistic is better than store brand but if you can afford to buy Dog food with the USDA stamp its far superior.

Ok, heres my two cents.
One, the beef was recalled because of the cruelty the animals where enduring and they where processing animals that couldnt walk, nothing new in the cattle world go to a sale barn.
In my quest to have a mini farm, let me tell you its almost a joke how easy it is to gain a organic farm title, they come out once and see that im not using anything non natural, thats it, now i do have to be certified organic to sell anything as organic but its not like they keep a watch on it or come out more than once to inspect. |

I am getting a puppy this next week. Had no clue what food to get really. I went with the Wellness Just For Puppy. It states on the package Wellness uses ethoxyquin-free protein sources. I never heard of the word before reading on this forum and checking my Dog food package. So now I still don't know if this is a good food? I was also thinking of getting Royal Canin brand. How is a person really to know these things. It always depends on who you talk to.  |

If you can find Timberwolf Organics is usually sold at speciality stores or Innova these are two decent kibbles.

i get my Dog either blue buffalo or edited food i think is best if you can get it.heard very good things about royal canin but don't know anybody that has used it.controversy aside i have started to switch my Dog to a raw diet.so far so good but i am taking it slow so as not to upset her stomach.good luck with your chouce

 omg!!! heres the kicker...i will now give all something to think about...back in the day...when we all were kids..if anyone out there is a baby boomer...our family Dog ate...whatever was on sale at the grocery store...usually dry...but also the little wormy looking things..cans too...if i remember correctly...the dogs lived just as long as they do now..and they didnt have near as many vet appointments...and again...back in the day when the farmers farmed their land and slaughtered their own beef...canned their own vegetables...etc..they didnt live near as long as we do.. and darn...they didnt even eat at mcdonalds..we will feed our kids mcdonalds and then worry about ..organic...holistic. for the dog???.... we all have our own opinions....what is sooooo wrong with purina...they have been around for many many years...and no recalls even...i have friends who lost entire kennels to diamond Dog food....we do not know what we are feeding unless we make it ourselves...and there are soooo many factors involved...other than feeding...genetics...environment...flea controll etc...noone could ever really say what is exactly right and what is exactly wrong...to each his own...why fight about it...there is a world of information within the google search engine...and if a semi intelligent person reads all that can be read..surely an opinion of satisfaction can be had...but this does not mean you or i will always agree....to each his own...!!!! |

back in the day if a Dog got sick no one did much about it, they are not as valued as they are today, so allot of the issues could have gone undected easily.
I belong to a group of about 200 raw feeders and just feeding raw has reversed HOD and PANO in Puppies. and helped recover from things that dogs are not suposed to. Living and thriving are two different things.
A mistake a raw feeder often makes is not feeding anything besides chicken, the Dog looks great for a bit but then begins to loose its good looks because its not getting the varriety of meat sources it needs, i cant stand kibble with grains and i cant stand the one protien meat source feeds.
I guarantee if you ever watch a Dog detox from being on kibble youd have a change of mind.
as for the person who was starting feeding raw, please email me if you have any questions or concerns at kabukienot@yahoo.com or post them here, however its show season so im not on here allot. |

 natural...could you explain feeding raw?? in the past i looked at a website which was all about feeding raw and how to feed raw...here is what it said...beef roast..hand it to the dog
whole chicken...hand it to the dog...whole ham...hand it to the dog...leg of lamb...hand it to the dog...is this what you mean...simply feeding raw...no cooking in any way?? no veges..just simply raw meat????? handed to the dog??? i dont get this...please explain exactly how this is done....and how it could be afforded for large breed dogs...and exactly...what the benefits are versus the drawbacks...is this meat you are purchasing from the grocer or fresh from your farm...dollars and cents??????? thanks!! |

oops...how do you calculate how much to feed and how often..if i remember correctly...a large piece of meat was good for a couple of days said the website..i dont think i could do this..this would be a huge change...would need to know EVERYTHING!!! what about tiny dogs...maltese and yorkies?? |

Having two giant breeds now that is all I feed is raw. If you don't do it from scratch or if you are in a time pinch there are some good raw diets pre-packaged at some of the speciality stores

I have 3 great danes now i feed raw and 2 small dogs, and its cheaper than the type of kibbles mentioned here.
It really is that simple, however they are going to an extream on sounding like you give a whole leg.
This is an example of one meal for a dane,
4 days a week, they get one meal of 4-5lbs of chicken quarters, 1 bag at wall mart is less than $5.
i mix it up allot with them but 2 out of the 4 days i only give 4lbs of chicken leg quartes and 1lb of what ever organs i have, I have found a great distributer that sells cheap ground organs for all sorts of critteres.
the rest of the week they either get pork neck bones, clearance meats, fish or hambuger, its important to have red meats in the diets. I feed 2lbs of tripe a week .
You never feed a Dog cooked bones, they can make them sick, and whole carrots can cause blockage as they can not digest them. www.rawfed.com is the site you probally went too, I only like the myths section as the rest of it has turned many people off, maybe i should just do a site on it. |

Oh and as far as the amount, thats a trial with every dog, just like us they have there own needs, 5% of the body weight is ideal for dogs already fit.
I have yet to find a draw back to the raw feeding, granted its slightly more complicated than scooping a bowl out of kibble but not much and you dont have a big open bag you have to store some where. I buy from my grocery store and the butcher scraps |

I dont see where this can be any more wrong than the title itself but the place i get my organs is xxxxxxxto find a distributer near you if there is one, ethnic markets are ideal as well.
I get quail, rabbit, beef and chicken from that place for around a 1.19 a lb and the tripe is awesome as its frozen and i feed it frozen so it doesnt smell bad.
