I know that this topic has been beaten to death over and over and over again but now it has hit home. I live about 2 hrs from what I consider a puppy farm and my dad bought a pom from them today
They have, yorkies, poms, toy poodles, chis, pugs, cockers, cavaliers, min pins, shih-tzus, bichon, havenese, schnauzers, cairn terriers, bostons, westies, doxies. Some are pure pom, pug, min pin but all the rest are mixes between two of the above. How stupid, pug x chi, lets put the weight of a pug on a chi's legs...There are 14 people that got together with all their dogs and started breeding them. They say that if you get a puppy with a hernia they recommend to spay/neuter because it can be hereditary - really? How did the Dog get the hernia in the first place? These people are cleaning up. Isn't there anything that I can do?

find out what the state & local kennel licensing requirements are. ( if any )
speak with AC or your humane society to find out what can be done
have you seen this for yourself? are they all at one place? is it clean? are the dogs crowded in the pens? |

Welcome to the horrors of breeding kennels! The USDA is the one who is usually oin charge of inspections as well as the state and local animal control folks. The USDA has the most power and the states usually go by their guidelines. Now, a "legal" kennel has to have cages that are kept in a clean and sanitary manner. Most kennels comply by putting the dogs on wire bottomed cages. The feces and urine go through the wire. The fact that the dog's feet are scarred in many cases MEANS NOTHING. The minimum space requirement is the length of the Dog Plus one half for length of the cage and the width of the Dog plus one half the width for the width of the cage. Thus a Dog that is 12 inches long and 6 inches wide would be "legal" if kept in a cage that is 18 inches long and 9 inches wide. The height is 6 inches above the dog's head when standing.Shelter must be provided. But, again, that term is open for discussion. I have seen puppy mils that kept 2 dogs in a "legal" size cage OUTSIDE with a blue plastic tarp over the top. The dogs snuggled together to keep each other warm.( I was at an auction at this kennel and the USDA inspector was there making sure your vehicle was ventilated and not overcrowded when you left. He did not have a problem with the tarped cages and the SNOW on top of the tarps. He said that these dogs were used to it!!!). I would raqther your da dhad not bought a puppy from these people. When they are making money there is no incentive to stop.I would guess they are not screening their breeding stock or they would not have problems with Inguinal Hernias. Umbilical hernias are not usually hereditary. It's a catch 22 situaton. People don't want to adopt older dogs and they don't want to pay alot so they go to the breeding kennels and "save" a puppy. but all they are doing is putting cash in the hands of the puppy mills.Or the pet shops. I hope someday there will be no need for rescues because every Dog and every child will be a wanted dog; a wanted child. |

let me see if I understand this.... it's ok for you to go there & buy dogs at auction, but her dad shouldn't have? hmmm. now I will grant you that there is a difference but it all ends up in the millers pocket.
very often there are people that work with the mills & just get the dogs out -no $$ involved.
the USDA does not begin to have the employees to do much in the way of inspecting kennels.
there are states that have no kennel licensing requirements of any kind. in some that do, the only one who has any jurisdiction is a state Dog warden. AC is not permitted in the factories. |

It's unfortunate because most places around here easily get a permit for 100 dogs - it is insanely easy, also, all these dogs are not in one place. It just frustrates me because breeding is one thing, cross breeding is another. |
