Quote ladybug2006: The vet said we could do insulin, that it would require shots every 12 hours for the rest of her life and that we would have to bring her in once a month, leave her all day, and they would test her levels...

I tried to google this Mellit but could find nothing that says its for the treatment of diabetic's. Is that the full name?

I did a search for diabetic dogs and found a lady that had been using this one her Dog and had stoped the insulin and all is going well. I think without double checking it came from xxxxxxxxx I called the company and talked to a lady and she said that that is what they use for diabetic dogs. we took her into our vet last night and he was very impressed with the improvement on her, Said he could draw blood but it would be a week until we got the results, Can I get a meter and is it easy to do?

. there are many brands & some with more bells & whistles, but all you need is one that will just read.

the norms are from 80 - 120. that will of course flucuate according to eating, in other words, if the Dog just ate it is going to be higher

you would have to ask your vet about what spots are best to prick as some you can use just about anyway, others only in the end of your finger

they are available at WM - any drug store or just about anywhere.

My old vet, remember he is kinda behind on things, was up to me trying it, he said it couldn't hurt, since our family opted to not go with the insulin, due to the cost, the commitment on our part, having to leave her at the vet hospital, this decision was very hard for all of us to make, so when I found the Mellit, I told my husband I wanted to try it on her, that maybe just maybe it would help her.( I have not been back to the big vet clinic, but I am going to call and talk with the vet tomorrow. She has been on the Mellit a week tonight, it is absolutely amazing the difference in her in a week, no she is not totally better but outsided friends and family have even noticed, She had us up at 5:00 am as there was a stray cat on the porch that she thought did not need to be there, she new this from her crate two rooms away, she even barked at a co worker last night when he came in, She is eating 3 small meals aday, boiled chicken and rice with green beans, sometimes I mix cottage cheese or plain scrambled egg in it, sometimes she gets lamb and rice Dog food, We are giving her daily vitamins, she goes thru one dish of water a day, maybe a little more some times, her coat looks back to normal, she is begging for food at dinner time. She has not been sick in a week, I will get a meter tomorrow when I am out and about and try it I am very interested to see what her reading is. like I said this whole thing is all new to me, the orginal diagnoses was overwhelming, trying to understand it all
