I am in the process of adopting a puppy from my local SPCA. The litter of 5 were brought in when they were 6 weeks old, my husband, daughter and I went and picked one out but I asked them to keep her with the rest of the litter until she is 8 weeks old (that way she would learn pack order, bite inhibition, etc) they agreed and are actually keeping the whole litter together now until they are 8 weeks. The owner said that the father was a yellow lab and the mother was an australian shepherd, but the spca thinks they are lab/catahoula leopard dog. I have done tons of research on all three and regardless of what the mother was we still want the pup. However, I am on a mission to find out! One female and one male are light blonde with white paws and a white stripe of their foreheads, two males are the blue/black merle and the last female (ours) is black/brown and white tri colored. They don't have webbed feet like the catahoula and they don't have the bobbed tail like the aussie. Does anybody know any very distinguishing traits of either Dog that could help me figure this out. I would like to know because the two are different when it comes to training methods and adult size. I get her at the end of this week.

Since the feet of the puppy are not webbed I would be surprised if it is a catahoula/lab mix. Since both breeds have webbed feet. Its just as possiable that your pup is a Great Dane/Lab mix or an Assie/Lab mix. Because the pup does not have a bobbed tail really doesn't mean its not an Assie mix, the pups could have gotten the labs tail. The shelter is guessing as much as you are. I can't tell you how many times I've seen dogs in shelters that were clearly not the mixes the shelter thought or claimed them to be. Sometimes in hopes of finding homes for some dogs they will ignore the obvious or glam up a mix. All with good intentions. |

does kind of sound like a dalmation/lab mix.although with stripes(i think you said) it still might be the aussie.maybe the tail not being bobbed is not a big deal, maybe whoever had the pups didn't want to bob their tails, some people don't believe in doing that.in any case your pup sounds vetry cute.hope you have fun with her and good luck |

Well I got the puppy today and I don't even care what she is, she is so cute, my little one year old loves her, my Chihuahua is terrified of her (which is funny because my chi is aggressive and thinks she is boss)! My Dachshund is mad-she is on kennel bed rest as she has degenerative disc disease and is partially paralysed right now so she is a little upset. But this Dog is so smart, I took her out of her kennel and took her outside, she peed after only a few seconds, then later when she pooped and I missed it, she did it right beside the door where I took her to pee! She is responding to "out" "come" and her name "Koba", after only a few hours. So whatever the breed she is crazy smart!! |

If you post a picture, people could have a better idea (though I know her breed doesn't matter to you).
Catahoulas are one of my favorite breeds, though I've never owned one. One of their obvious features are their tendency to have strikingly beautiful eyes. Some are a piercing blue color. I'm sure if you looked up pictures that you noticed that. |

Unfortunately we cannot afford surgery which was estimated upwards of $3000. All the medication we have tried makes her very sick and she can't hold down food. We are more or less hoping she will either get better in kennel rest or go paralysed so we can buy her a cart. Everything we have tried thus far has back fired, if I didn't know any better I would say she didn't want to get better. Even though partially paralysed, she lets the new pup know who was here first!!! And yes our Chihuahua has proven who the boss is, the tables have turned, Koba now watches herself! How do I post a picture? |

A cart is a mobility aid for pets which is similar to a wheelchair for humans. |

i just pictured the baby buggies that i see every so often with the dogs in them.they are made for dogs and i guess they work pretty well for dogs that have trouble walking.my bad for not recognizing that earlier. |
