if you have no knowledge of even the most basic info about breeding - you should not be doing it.
obviously you did none of the health testing that should be done & even more so in the giant breeds.
why are you breeding her? if you love the breed so much then why would you risk your dogs life? & risk bringing more poorly bred dogs into the world
make an appointment & get her spayed asap.
I hope you will read both these links so you can understand better just some of the things you need to know BEFORE breeding

Danes are my favorite breed too! Before you breed your Dog she should be at least 2 1/2 years old. As you know, they are not fully matured til then. You need to have her hips certified as free from hip dysplasia through OFA( your vet can guide you on this.) and you need to research her lines to find what dfaults it has as well as research the male and be sure he is from OFA stock and his eyes are certified. Why? more and more people are suing the breeders and winning when they get a puppy with genetic defects. You want to be able to offer a guarantee that your stock is free from the genetic faults that plague Danes. The next thing to think about is the cost of raising Dane pups to 8 weeks. Figure the bitch will need about 1 1/2 times the food, and high quality food at that, than what she normaLLY eats. Your pups will need 3 series of DHLPP shots and worming befor you place them. They will eat about 1-2 pounds of food each every day when they are 6-8 weeks old. Are you prepared to take them back if the new owner changes their mind? When I tell a prospective dane owner that their puppy will chew the furniture into match sticks, they don't believe me....until that day when they come home to find the drapes and the couch eaten by the new puppy. If you are ready to be a responsible breeder, go ahead and have a litter or two. Without breeders there would be no Puppies. a no brainer, I know!) but remember the responsibility that comes with bringing life into this world. And that is any form of life whether animal or human! Otherwise, do rescue work. It is very rewarding to take a Dog who has been deemed worthless and turn him around. Ask any of the movie Dog trainers who get 70% of their dogs from Dog pounds. Good luck! |

Are you saying that each puppy would need to have 3 vaccinations each of DHLPP before they leave at 8 week? That wouldn't even be possible even if you started the series at 6 weeks.
Normally, breeders 'start' the puppy series that is completed by the purchasing family. Unless you have some very old Puppies that you are trying to sell, because they shouldn't be finishing their puppy vaccines until they are about 16 weeks.
Typical would be for the breeder to have the Puppies vet checked and their first round of vaccinations before going home.

There are some great books that can help you with this information. Also the breeder you got your dogs from should be willing and able to help you. Breeding is not for the faint of heart or for the light of wallet. Make sure you have the time, energy and funds to do this before you allow your dogs to mate.
14 Puppies would not be unheard of in a litter of GDanes. Thats a whole lot of food, water and poop to clean up after for 8 weeks. |

Puppies should not be getting lepto which is the L in the DHLPP until at least the 3 series.
the protocol for all 27 vet schools & the AVMA is that first shots should not be given until 8 weeks
that is why responsible breeders keep their Puppies until they are 12 weeks old so they can give the second shot & have some protection against parvo. |

Ok, there are many things to take into consideration with breeding danes, they are prone to a ton of health issues, and no one ever intentionally breeds a litter of defected Puppies. Color is a huge factor with the danes, so I must ask what color is she and the stud you plan on using.
How old is the bitch, danes have many proven issues with breeding to early and to late.
What kind of set up do you have to handle a potential of 15 Puppies. and remeber thats 15 Puppies pooping, chewing, whinning, barking. I can tell you from first hand experience they are the hardest breed to maintain a litter with because of the size alone and the defects that can be caused due to certain things.
Im by no means telling you not to breed your bitch, but I feel as a lover of the breed and just dogs in general its my responcibilty to make sure you are prepaired for it all.
Danes are 50% more likely to bloat during mating, 75% more likely if they are on a kibble diet, the risk of injury to both dogs is higher than normal because of once again, sheer size.
A bitch will cock her tail when you rub or scratch near her private area as thats natural instinct to get the tail out of the way, thats not a guaranteed thing, but unless you can pinpoint the exact days of her heat stages thats the best i can do. If you would like to talk more about the breed feel free to email me at kabukienot@yahoo.com, I have tons of info including some things that most dane owners never know about that have helped my old guy be 11 and just starting to grey and show some stiffness, other than that he still trys to act like hes two playing and running around. |

Well you lost me there. I don't know if you even have a Great Dane. Average age for a Danes lifespan is about 8. Though some live 10-12, it would be VERY OLD for a DANE.
Even the newest of the newbies should know a Dane that old, a female, is way past her breeding years. I don't even know if a girl that old would still continue to have FERTILE heat cycles. |
