Its a long story so I'll try to make it short. We got a 2nd giant breed. This one was wheezing from day one. When we questioned her the Breeder said its snorting and not to be concerned and that it was the way the pallette was formed. We took her word and bought the pup. We took the Dog to the vet. His right lung is wheezing. His left lung was fine. He was on one week of 1000 mg amoxicaps per day. Ended antibodics on Wed. On Thursday he wasn't gurgling. This morning the congestions started up again in his noise. The breeder brushed this off as he always has snorted since she could remember. We'll I felt like saying maybe its because the puppy was sick and you never took care of it. Is it possible that some of this noise is from having nasal passages too small. We bought a Saint Bernard. I feel betrayed because the breeder lied. She said she had him to the Vet and he was fine. This is a lie because when we took him immediately his lung were filling up. The antibodics didn't work. What if anything can we do? Vet was to try another antibodic. Not sure if this is a good idea? Now it seems like its guesswork. I bought some mucous enzymes to clear the nasal passages and was going to start him on it tonight. Any suggestions.

first let me say i'm sorry for your pup being sick,it stinks that people would take adavantage of somebody like that.but as far as the vet wanting to give another antibiotic,it might be worth a shot, sometimes in humans the first course of meds isn't always successful either.but as long as you trust your vet give it a shot it might just do the trick.i hope your pup gets better.it also might be worth getting a chest xray,i don't know if they can get this at this eArly age but it could be chf, pneumonia etc.i hope your pup feels better

Thank you for sharing. You are right like humans sometimes we need another round or even a different type of antibodic. There is something though confusing to me. The vet's assistant said that the antibodics would clear infection but not necessarily get rid of the mucous and congestion. She said the body has to do that. So I am wondering what the antibodics do and how the vet could even tell now if he has a potential of infection?

have they done blood work yet?cultures would be the most important thing to do to see what kind of bad stuff is maybe growing in your pups bloodstram.coughing is a way of bringing excretions but at the same time can cause irritation.is your pup in pain? it could also be pleurisy, which is something like pneumonia.don't mean to be making you nervous or upset with all of this ,again hope gets better.

Bowser, a simple way to find out if the breeder had taken the puppy to the vet or not is to call the breeder and ask to speak to the vet that looked at the puppy.

Don't assume just because when you have taken the puppy in with Pneumonia that it didn't just develop it.

Kennel cough and other things CAN TURN IN TO PNEUMONIA. It can be a cold one day and pneumonia the next. There are different things that cause pneumonia and of course you need to treat it with another antibiotic. What else would you do? That is one thing that antibiotics are good for treating.

Sometimes it takes one round of antibiotics, sometimes it takes more than one round. My normal vet was gone, and I had to take my pneumonia Puppies to a new vet, they gave her a HORSE PASTE antibiotic and she quit wheezing in 2 days and was fine in 3, although of course I continued with the treatment the full 10 days.

That is my next step is when I contact the breeder again to ask for the vets name. I have never heard of Horse Paste. What type of antibodic is it? Depending on how long the pup has had the pneumonia can it take longer to go away. I went to the Vets office and found out my vet is away for 2 weeks but was told that sometimes a Dog will still have residual coughing after the antibodics. I am beginning to think that 7 days probably wasn't enough. I am working part time today and put a humidifier next to his crate before I left the house. He seems to be doing better today. I am surprised he never mentioned doing a blood test or xrays. I have read also that kennel cough can turn into pneumonia. Not sure if it was wise to give 3rd set of vaccines when this was going on before we got him. I hope that doesn't compound the problem. The way the vet described my pups condition was that it was his opinion that the Dog had this awhile for the lung to be wheezing like it was. The breeder took the noise for the snorting which she thought was a separate problem. How can one be sure that the pneumona is getting better. The signs so far is that he is not coughing, sneezes very rarely, he is eating fine, sleeping and is playful. One thing I keep noticing is off and on it sounds like he has a stuffy nose. Not sure if the latter is something to worry about. Thank you. Please let me know about Horse Paste.

If your vet is not a farm vet and have not used this medication, they may not have it on hand or they may not let you have it.

Good luck.

I called and had the vet assistant ask the vet filling in for my vet that's away on vacation and they told me that they have heard on it but not for usage in Puppies - said it was too strong - so they wouldn't prescribe it to me. So now I am back at square one

Hi:
The pup is better still has nasal congestion in the nose. Seems to be only in the morning. Very little during the day. When we go out for our walks it seems not to make the noise through his nose. I was going to go buy a vaporizer. I was told that there is one made by Segal that is real small that would help with congestion. Whats bad is that when the pup was in at the vets last week he couldn't tell how much the congestion was due to the pneumonia versus the nostrils being small. I never heard of a Saint having too small of nostrils so I am lost right now. Sounds like a Bull Dog at times. Pup doesn't act sick and is eating and playing fine stubborn as all get out though. He is 63 lbs already. When he doesn't want to move I have a heck of a time with him. He's really smart too.

I figured. Vets don't like to try new things, just because someone tells them about it. Obviously you have to have the correct dosage. I treated an 8 pound puppy with .3 CC (3)X per day. That is a very tiny amount, but it is strong. It's for horses. She recovered quickly.

Wasn't there someone who raised Saints that used to post on here? She said she quit raising them due to such terrible epilepsy in almost every bloodline?

Your absolutely correct. I remember the lady you are speaking of but I can't remember her name. That wouldn't surprise me about the Saints and the genetic problems with epilesy.
Maybe I will wait until my regular vet comes back and run it by them. You almost always have to go to them with the information to give them otherwise you really are at their mercy.

I have made a vet appointment with a veternarian in the area that deals with many Saints also show dogs. I am going to get to the bottom of this - If it is a soft palate problem how serious is this - does anyone know the symptoms other than what I have read so far it sounds similar although some things have subsided in the pup quite alot, but he still snorts in the morning. Also narrow nares could be part of the problem. I am so worried I will find out tommorrow evening my appt. is 5:20 Central time. Narrow nares is this common. Can any of these be outgrown? I'd hate to consider surgery but I will do whats in the best interest for the pup. He is about 3-1/2 months now about 60 lbs.

i don't know if this is possible in dogs but he could be having a form of sleep apnea.with the soft palate in humans it kind of causes the sleep apnea, maybe far fetched but worth asking about .hope all goes well.let us know
