Ok so here is the problem. Ruby, 7 months old, has decided that she is not going to come to me, or my husband, when we call her. This is something new because she has ALWAYS come when we call. This only happens when we let her out to go potty. After she has "done her thing", she will run to the far side of the yard and just sit there and look at me. If I go to her she runs off again and sits. It is like she is trying to play "catch me if you can". We walk her for at least 45min- hour and play fetch with her for at least 30 mins every day. She comes right in the house when we are done playing fetch. We do have a fenced in yard so she won't get out, but what do I do??? She has never been able to just "run free" out side with out us being out there but now we can't even take her out, even to go potty, with our a leach on. I have had a few dogs in the past but never has this happened to me.

Just keep working on it. I have that issue too with both of mine. The yorkie will decide to run in on her own terms after a short time, but often with my Pom I will stand inside the door and ask him if he wants a treat. This gets his attention every time. He is actually listening to me more as of late without the suggestion of a treat.

I guess we need to go back to doing the recall command on leash with 2 people or a long leash. I have also kept them on leash for potty breaks, but with winter it does get old, plus the Pom likes his privacy now that he is used to it.

dogs as we know are super intelligent. sounds to me like Ruby thinks you are a soft touch and can get her own way.

I think that is a common problem. We have a 2yr old Collie and he does that every now and then. We live in the Northeast so it is very cold in the morning so it is not reasonable to leash him, the yard is closed in and we have found that as soon as he is through playing in the snow or gets cold he comes to the door. It never happens when we are hiking or walking the woods, he will come right back, so we think it is just a game to him some mornings. I wouldn't worry unless he doesn't come when called when walking without a leash. Just our thoughts.

i agree it does sound like she is playing.might be worth trying on a leash for awhile and letting her know who is boss.not trying to sound bossy or anything but when training or working with dogs you have to let them know who is boss,be firm and let them know who the alpha Dog is ,if they pick up on you being timid with them, you could be in for the long haul.hope you have good luck with your dog.

Thanks for the reassurance!!! All of you responded what I thought was going on. Ruby is VERY smart and I know she is "testing me". it just drives me CRAZY!!! It is funny how I can take her to the beach or hiking and she listens. oh well...i guess we will just keep her on the leash for a little while and see what happens. Thanks again for all of your help.

I recommend that you try clicker training and then when your Dog does something right you can give her a treat so she knows to do it again!!!

GOOD LUCK!!!
