Hi
I have a 10 month old female Maltese . she is so playful , warm and friendly . I am thinking to get another little dog. Which breeds do Maltese get along well with ? Are Maltese good with other dogs in the house? I prefer small size breeds. Thank you very much .

Is she housetrained?? I would not get another Dog unless and until the first Dog is 100% housetrained.

When looking for your second Dog Temperment in my opinion is as important as the breed. You mentions some wonderful things about your dogs temperment, but is that with humans or dogs? Often the most loving and sweet dogs become Cugo when another Dog is around. I would test her around other dogs before I got another, if you haven't already.

I would suggest searching for Maltese forums and talking to people who own the breed. I have seen many that have a maltese and one or more other dogs. I know they generally do well with Yorkies as I've seen a fair amount of people with both.

You should see how they do with each other before purchase and hopefully at 10 months your current Dog is on its way to being 100 percent potty trained. I got my yorkie when she was 4 months and my Pom was just under a year. The Pom was 100 percent on potty training and the York followed his lead. They do play fight a lot and my Pom will not lay down next to the yorkie on most occasions but I can tell they enjoy each other I've heard from others that get two when they are fairly young they do better than waiting until one is older. Just remember 2 is a lot more work but twice the fun!

she is 100% housetrained . she occassionally plays in the house with the neighbor`s dogs( Chihuahua and Dachsund ) but it is only 1-2 hours so I do not know how she will do in longer hours. I will follow the Maltese forums. Thank you .

Then I think you are safe to get another dog. I would however NOT get a Yorkie. I think a Pug, Chihuahua, Doxie may be good choices. Good luck. Let us know what you deside.

Geez if you're going to make such a broad statement I wish you would state the reasons so we can all know. I gather you don't care for Yorkies. Mine is the sweetest girl who doesn't fit the generalized descriptions of the negatives said about the breed. I have seen several people that have those 2 breeds together with no serious issues so I'm curious what your reasoning is. They are actually very sweet dogs and mine is not a terror. Hasn't done any major chewing damage or anything seriously naughty at all.

OP you could also consider a Pom if you like a playful pup who loves thier toys and will smile at you every day. When a song comes on the tv it is a riot to watch them listen along with a head tilt or 2 to the beat.

Well PP I'd be happy to explain it to you. I would not put a Maltesse and a yorkie together because I feel the personalities of the two breeds may not mesh well. That is my opinon.

As for your assumption that I do not like Yorkies your quite wrong. Athough a yorkie would not fit with my own lifestyle, I enjoy their festy yet sweet personalities very much. I have read several books about Yorkies and cared for many. I always have the best time playing with them. As I have often said this breed like so many others is not for everyone. They are very hard to housetrain and generally need a strong leader to remind them who runs the show.

Clearly I offened you and for that I'm sorry. I wasn't bashing your breed, just giving an opinion.

Thanks for explaining. Just trying to get where you're coming from as you recommend a Chi to go with a Maltese (is that based on the few hours the OP says they have played together) Chi's are known to be very territorial and have many of the same negative characteristics listed as Yorkies. What's to say she wouldn't get a Chi puppy who would completely take over her sweet happy easy going little girls life?

I was puzzled because it stuck in my memory bank a previous post where someone had 4 dogs and seemed kinda flighty and was asking advice on getting another. I told them I thought they should concentrate on the 4 they had. You said oh go ahead and get another I know a woman who has eight. I just don't recall you being concerned what the breeds were etc.

Actually I didn't recommend the Chi based on a few hours her Dog has played with one. I recommended it because I have seen the combo work well together. I had several families on my client list who have the combo. In each case the Maltesse was the first Dog and the Chihuahua second. You will note the my first pick for her was a Pug and not the Chihuahua. As I said before temperment is the number one issue when picking your second dog.

As I have said in the past, I give my opinions based on my experiances in having owned, bred, shown and worked with dogs both in rescue and as the owner of a pet sitting service, for the last thirty some years. NO one has to take my advice or even agree with it.

As for your second comment.. It was sometime ago and unlike yourself I don't remember it well enough to inteligently defend my posistion at this point. But if you want to take the time and energy to go back and find the link I'd be happy to explain myself to you again.

Have a great day!

Hi Everyone
Thank you very much for your suggestions . All your thoughts are very helpful . I am still a bit confused whether or not getting a new puppy will be good for my girl . I agree that Maltese are great dogs and I think they can do good with any other breed but I am not sure if the other breed will do good with Maltese :) since mine is extremely mellow and sensitive , I am thinking to get another maltese puppy . I talked to the breeder , they will have the next available Puppies in May . I love all the breeds you mentioned . I wish I had the chance to have many dogs in the house

Try bring you Dog to a ASPCA.Ask if you can look at some of the dogs.Look carefully at how your Dog interacts with each dog.If their is one she or he pulls you to,then maybe you should ask if you a staff member can take out the Dog and see if the dogs will try and play togather.Remeber it is inportin that you dogs like each other more than getting a small dog.

Good Luck!
