I'm not wanting to know what you think the perfect breed is, I'm asking for help to find the best breed for my family. I have two young girls, and we live in ND right now and will for the next 2 1/2 yrs. Next we could move somewhere hot, we don't know. So I'd like a small Dog that's good in most weather, and great with kids. I prefer med. length hair, and not rough. I don't have time for the really long hair breeds. My dream Dog would also be hypoallergenic, because I don't think my girls are allergic, but I don't know. I liked the Brussels Griffon, but I know I can't deal with the hair (stripping it or whatever it's called.) Then I found the Shiffon and I really like that a lot, but my hubby thinks 4-9 hundred is too much to spend on a mix breed. But basically that's the size and look I like.
I'm asking for other Dog breeds I can look into. Oh did I say I want a small indoor dog... but my hubby wants something big enough "to really play with." He's always had Labs and that's what he wants, but living on an Air Force Base and having small children and more on the way I think that size is too big. Anyways I'd appreciate any suggestions you could give me. Thanks!! |

I think you might like a Boston Terrier...they are in three sizes and the largest only goes to 25 lbs. I had one for 11 years and she was the BEST Dog I ever had...they do shed a bit but nothing compared to some breeds...they have very short coats and are tough enough for your hubby but great with kids...the down side is that they snore and snort a lot..I thought it was adorable but might bother some people.Extremely smart and easy to train, she traveled everywhere we went and was a pure joy to have...I recomend them to everyone.Mine never had a sick day in her life until the last two weeks and the vet couldn't even tell me what happened to her.You shoud look them up on the internet and judge for yourself.... P.S. PLEASE if you are going to get ANY dog...buy from a reputable breeder only...you will be glad you did when you don't have to fork over hundreds of dollars to a vet to fix poor breeding problems. |

Wow, Boswer... you are a very rude and unhelpful person. I wish you hadn't responded at all. Please don't judge me or my family, you don't know us.
Rootie! I didn't know Boston Terriers came in 3 sizes, thanks. I will look into them, and don't worry we will only buy from a reputable breeder. The cost of any breed isn't an issue, my dear hubby just doesn't think a mixed breed should cost so much, but he doesn't know a lot about Dog prices. Thanks again. |

What you describe "As wanting the perfect Dog so to speak" is a good reason why so many dogs end up homeless, abandoned, and in shelters. If I offended you so be it. Boswer |

Have you thought about a Boston rescue? not only will the price please your hubby but the dogs are wonderful...you might not get a puppy but that's not always a bad thing...an older Dog or young adult is already past all the puppy problems...ie...chewing,house training and they are usually spayed/nuetered and are fully vetted including needles...a lot of people think that dogs are in rescue because they are "bad" or have other undesirable problems...NOT TRUE... they come into rescue for many different reasons from, puppy mill rescues to the death of an owner...these dogs then find themselves in a strange place that must be very hard for them...check out some rescue's and read the "happy tails" section...I truly believe that they know they have been rescued and show their appreciation a hundred fold. Good Luck and keep us posted on whatever breed you decide on. |

If you don't want one don't get one, but Labs are terrific for children! My lab lets my 8-year-old brother wrestle with her and never nips or gets frustrated! They are fairly good size though and from my experience love to sleep with someone at night. They require almost no hair upkeep though. They do shed quite a bit, I vaccuum at least weekly, and twice a week if I am having company. Just something else to consider if your husband wants one. I know how my boyfriend is about his labs!! |

Small Dog good in any weather med-hair...soft not rough, little or no grooming required Hypoallergenic Great with kids For two young girls Cost less than 400.00
First let me say, very few small breed dogs are known to be "great with kids". Nor a young children generally "great" with small dogs.
Second there is NO SUCH THING AS A HYPOALLERGENIC DOG, that is a myth. There are some Dog breeds that seem to produce less dander than others but even within the breed and with in a litter you will find big differance how much dander each Dog produces. Each individual Dog must be scraped and tested to see the level of dander produced and then tested against the allergic person to see if they react to it. Also many people are actually allergic to the saliva and not the dander. All dogs have saliva. This information was given to me by one of the top allergists and lung specialtist in the US. My son has reactive asthma and I made my living running a pet sitting service. I had to know these things.
Third... your price constrictions do rule out a good many dogs.
However... Keeping in mind everything I've already said... Have you thought about a 13" Beagle? I know several familys who have done well with this breed.

I don't think she is saying it has to be under $400. She doesn't want to pay that much for a mixed breed. She said in her reply that the cost wasn't the issue.
I do agree...there is no such thing as hypoallergenic in a dog. I also agree that a small Dog may be hard to obtain. Most small dogs don't have the patience for children. Others are too delicate to be around children.
I have a min pin that does very good with my children, but if they have friends over...I don't trust her. She tries to protect my children and if they get too rambunctious, she gets very upset. I often end up gating her at this end of the house when there are other children here! |

Have you thought about a bulldog? They are very sweet, good with kids, and their size is right in the middle between your preference and your husband's preference. They are very expensive, though, they cost about $2000 from a reputable breeder, if that price is too much, you should look into recueing a bulldog, they sometimes have Puppies. but like someone already said adults are great too! If you do decide to get one look them up do alot of research, and visit some breeders, you find breeders near you on the Bulldog Club of America website.
Good Luck! |

hi,welcome.try getting a corgi.they do shed though.they get to be any where from 20lbs(female pembroke) to to 30-35 lbs(male cardigan).they don't particularly like very hot weather, but they do have 2 coats for the colder weather.one i think is for the rain(outer) and the othercoat is for the warmth.they are very good dogs, mine loves kids.but as with any Dog they proably shoudn't be left alone with a small child until you are sure how they are going to react.for a good Dog though it will cost you anywhere between $600- $1,000.maybe more if your looking show quality.good luck |

Perfect breed, didn't know one existed. Are there any perfect children out there???? Or maybe perfect adults????? Maybe the questions should have been worded differently. This is a free country and I don't need to butt out of anything dearie. Boswer |

Hey Air Force Mom, my husband and I have a lab and she is the most loving Dog ever. I have 4 neices and nephews that play with her pretty roughly and she never gets angry and nips. She does have her other side though, my husband plays with her really roughly but she is very good at settling right down when told to. Like everyone else said they do shed quite a bit, but brushing this breed only takes a few minutes a day. Good luck with your search!!! |

Oh Bowser, here you go AGAIN...you don't have to pick apart every post to find a "flaw" in the wording...of course there's no PERFECT anything...we all know that, but your the only one that jumped right on it and made a big deal out of it...like I said...you'll try to start an argument out of every post. Why oh why can't you just join in the conversation like everybody else and not be so nasty all the time? Try it, you just might like it. |

Sorry I've not been replying to comments, but shortly after my last post I hurt my neck bad, and I've been kind of out of it. It's better now, but my meds are still making me loopy, so I've not been on here. I have seen more people have suggested a few more breeds and I'm thankful for it! You have given me a lot to think about!!
My main thing is I want a Dog (puppy or rescue) that will be happy with us in our lifestyle. Which means children, unpredictable weather, and moving around. So thanks for your suggestions, and if anyone has more, Please post, I'd love to hear them!
But I do have a question about the hypoallergenic... People say it's a myth, okay. So is it a myth that some dogs have hair vs. fur? I've heard Bishons and Poodles have hair, not fur so they don't shed. And that's why everyone is doing "designer dogs" with these two breeds. Is this true? |

Dogs like Maltese and Poodles have fur that is hair like, meaning that it grows and grows unless you cut and and will keep growing..I think that is what they mean by having hair, also that doesn't mean they don't shed just that they lose their hair.
I am not sure that that is 100% correct. |

No your right. Some dogs, Maltese,Shih tzu's, Llasa Opso, Poodles, Bichons, have hair similar to human hair in that it isn't "shed" but requires groomed every few weeks and not just given a quick bath. Their hair falls out like ours too. On some dogs lose more hair than others. My husband brushes his hair and you can see plenty of hair in the brush, I brush mine, not so much. When I hair was long I was forever picking stray hairs off my coat and sweaters. Thats kinda what you'll find with the breeds listed above. You'll find Dog hair for sure on your furniture and clothing, but they will be longer and normally easier to pick up. IN MY OPINON.
