Is a DNA test the only way to tell what type of wolf your dog in mixed with? I have a white german shepherd with red on the tips of her ears and down the middle of her back. Our vet thinks she may be a red wolf mix. Does that sound right?

There is no accurate DNA test to tell if a dog is part wolf or how much wolf. Since real red wolves are VERY rare and the ones in captivity are part of the government breeding program in qualified zoos and wildlife parks, it is VERY unlikely any mixbreed dog or wolfdog is really part red wolf. I see that claimed somewhat often and know it's bogus. The coloration on your dog is due to the sable gene (giving the reddish shading over other colors including white) which exists in many breeds and mixes of breeds of dog. It is not at all indicative of wolf heritage.
