we just got a 12 week old cavachon two days ago. she's very sweet, sleeps all night with us, and is doing great on potty training. my question is what can we do so she doesn't whimper and shake if she's not glued by our side? also, when she's seen other dogs she freezes in place and shakes. what can we do to encourage her to be more social and less of a scaredy cat? :)

I have a 14wk cavachon, Lola. She was the same as yours when I first got her 4 weeks ago. I introduced her to next door neighbors puppy, she hid all the time at first. But they are pals now. Also, sleeping with you isn't doing her any favors. I have a cage for lola, its something she can call her own with her favorite treat and toys.

Do NOT pick him up. That reinforces the fear response. Find a friend with a dog, not too big, that is socialized and invite them for a walk. Do that a couple of times, then bring them both into your yard, release them from their leashes, and ignore them. If you pup hides, that's okay, just DON'T talk to him, pet him, or pick him up. He WILL get used to the other dog with time. I KNOW this works because I used it to socialize my friend's dog. It only took lots of patience and 2 visits! Now our dogs are best friends.

BTW letting your dog sleep with you will NOT hurt the dog in any way. Mine have always slept with me, and I've had dogs for 50+ years. Each dog, and breed, did just fine.
