I have a two year old cairnoodle and find that watchdog is an apt description. She lays in our picture window and keeps an eye on the yard. She will bark when she sees someone she doesn't know or if she sees a cat. The key to a dog that barks is training. Its her job to tell us when she sees a stranger. I just taught her good job, but now no bark! No bark is the word I use to have her stop. It works for us.
