I have a Beagle and a cat that get along well. A dog and cat will usually become friendly fast if the cat is acquired after the dog. If you only have a cat and introduce a dog into your home, it may take a little before the cat understands or is willing to now share it's territory. We had already owned the beagle before adopting the cat, so the cat grew up sharing it's territory with a dog. This also made her less hostile towards our two golden retrievers we later adopted, though there still was a little initial hostility. If you do see hostility between the two, be aware that they may not be fighting at all. It is more than likely one of them teaching the other the rules and limits of both their territory and personal actions. Once that animal learns these rules that the other has laid down, the fighting should stop.
