we found a beautiful black male puggle and took him to the vet, he is about 2yrs old, has not been fixed. he is attatched to my husband. we have a 4yr old cocker spaniel that he loves, they get along great and i have 3kids. he is a good dog until my husband leaves or when we retreat to upstairs for the evening. i do not let my dogs up stairs at all. he barks and cries the whole time. we have tried to put him in the dog cage , he got mad and pooped in it and tore the blanket. not knowing his history is hard, any suggestions to get him used to being downstairs when we are working and at bed time? again we have tried to put him the cage when we are not around him.

I had the same issue with my puggle who is now 5 years old. I put a dog bed, blanket, pillow and 1 soft toy in his cage and bought a tarp to completely cover it at night. The vet told me since dogs are den animals they need to feel safe. After we got the tarp and he was wrapped in darkness he completely stopped crying and will even put himself in his own cage when he gets sleepy.

If you have a basement, then put both dogs there when you go to the 2nd floor. If you don't have a basement, then put the two dogs together in a bathroom or other closed room on the 1st floor. The key is to keep both dogs together in your husband's absence. That should be a good start to rectifying the situation.
