Your puppy is very smart! It seems that he's caught on the the crate training habit. He's learned not to poo where he sleeps and plays and goes when he's out. What you need to do is as soon as you let him out of the pen, take him outside so he can do his business on the grass. Then reward him with praise and treats. Some people dont want to potty train their dogs to go outside and only want them to go on the wee wee pads. If that is the case, then you need to set up another pen with wee wee pads covering everywhere. Then when you bring him out of his own pen, immediately put him in the pen with the pads. As soon as he goes potty or poo, praise him and reward him, and then let him out to play. After a while of repeating this, then start leaving the pen open with the pads. So that as soon as you bring him out of his own pen, place him on the pad and he should know to do his business. Eventually he will go to the pad himself.
