We have a Yorkie mix that we adopted from the Humane Society. We have had him for 3 weeks. Every once in a while he starts wheezing, coughing sort of thing. Most of the time he does this is in the middle of the night. Does anyone know what this is and if it needs to be treated by a Vet? Otherwise he is a typical playful and entergetic dog.

It sounds like reverse sneezing, but a vet check out wouldn't hurt. It could be kennel cough since he was just adopted recently.

If it was a rescue, it's not uncommon for shelters to have dogs with "kennel cough." Also, because of their tiny lungs (especially if you live in a cold or humid climate)it's easier for small breeds to develop pnuemonia. Sounds like a vet check is in high order.

Sounds like reverse sneezing. My yorkie did this when we brought him home scared the daylights out of me. There are 3 vets where we take our furry kids and all 3 said the same thing. However the 3rd one suggested 2ML of baby benadryl at night since this was the worst time for Duncan. It has worked like a charm and he may eventually grow out of it at which time we stop giving the medicine. Good luck.
