Technically Westies should only have wire coats. But some breeders are trying to breed softer coats (why--I do not know). I have three Westies--a mom and dad and their daughter). The dad is the only one with a real Westie wire coat. The girls have softer coats, but two of the litter mates had rough coats--all three puppies from the soft-coated Mom and the wire-coated dad. Of course we love them all --it is the best breed !!

Westies only come with one kind of coat choice but the quality of the coat varies greatly. Westies have a double coat, the outer hairs are suppose to be coarse and longer, with a soft undercoat that is shorter. Some poor quality dogs have so little coat they look like a scruffy wire coated dog and others are so soft or curly and they can matt. A normal coat is coarse to the touch and grows minimum 2 to 4 inches long.check AKC.org for the breed standard.how they are clipped or stripped will make them look totaly different. You may have seen one clipped really short, looks like a short coated dog.

Simple answer: only one coat, but some westies are smoother than others. If you clip the hair it will smooth out. If you hand strip it then it will have a wire coat. Breeders that breed for smooth coats breed for the wrong reasons!!!!
