Siberian Husky Question

is husky a safe and good dog for kids and around other animals

Because Siberian huskies have a high prey drive, they are not always totally safe with small animals including cats and other pets. They may not be the best choice for really young children either, but for older ones they can be a fun companion as long as they receive good training and plenty of exercise. A fenced yard is a must with this breed, and an owner who has the time and commitment to meet the needs for exercise and training. Huskies can run miles a day and can not be left alone and unexercised. They will be very destructive if so.

We have 2 Huskies, an American Staffordshire, 2 Cats, and 2 young Children. We have NEVER had any issues. Huskies are extremely playful and intelligent. Because of this, they will get themselves in to some occasional trouble. Train them early, and always introduce any animal to ALL members of your household in a controlled environment *BEFORE* you bring them in to your home!

Some other things I should point out about this is that even when your raise a Siberian from puppyhood with other small animals, that doesn't guarantee safety forever. I have been involved in this breed for over 25 years and have lived with about a dozen myself, as well as being very active in the commumity of owners. Small pets can egage in behaviors that trigger prey drive at any point, and I have first hand knowledge of Sibes killing cats and other pets even after years of being safe with them. It is something a prospective Sibe owner needs to understand fully, so they can take appropriate precautions.

Siberian scan coexist with any animal. It's asinine to state they have a prey instinct as if all dogs no matter the breed don't have the same exact instinct. If they are raised with the animals and you provide proper regular supervised exposure and don't just throw them together they will be fine and co exist very well. It comes down to the owners of the dogs and not properly exposing and supervising the interactions within the first year of them getting acquainted that can account for issues later on. Huskies just don't kill. I have six Siberian huskies and three cats and have never once had an issue. They love everyone and think they are lap dogs. It comes down to how you raise them and treat them.
