You really don't have to cut a schnauzers hair a certain way, its just the most recognizable. I have 2 schnauzer's and they just have their beards and the skirt the usual way.

Actually..the mini-schnauzer coat should be stripped to be properly cared for. a stripped coat allows the coarse coat to come to the top and will be tangle free. There is little or no skirt in a correctly groomed schnauzer and the leggins should be short and blend into the coat. The whiskers were used just as a cat uses it's whiskers to make sure there was room for the dog to go into a hole chasing rabbits or other varmits. Shaving the face from beauty mark on the side of the head to beauty mark is the accepted correct way to keep the whiskers correctly trimmed...find a good groomer.
