Just got a rescue Schipperke 10 years old; ran loose on a farm, animal control said pen him up, so owner gave him to me. Has not been to a vet in 6 years; seems healthy and so friendly. How long do they live and how do you pronounce Schipperke? Thanks

My schips have lived between 11-15 years, but I know they have been reported up to 16 yrs or so. Name is pronounced skip-er-kee. Please be aware that these dogs can be quite energetic up to age 10-11. They usually mellow in senior years. All my schips have had problems with their back end giving out periodically as they age, and most have developed some degree of arthritis, but they are tough little dogs and usually are not complainers, so you should get your dog checked out thoroughly to be sure there isn't something going on. I have had Schips for about 18 years now, and am on rescue # 3+4. Good luck!

My schip lived to be 15 1/2. She was my best friend. She was very loyal to myself and my children. She was even a mother to a new born cat, which we found abondoned by a stray cat. Schips are a very good best friend and they love almost everyone. I miss my best friend with all of my heart!
