The dewclaws are the fifth claw on the front paws.They are located on the side of the paw. They are generally removed because they do no good for the dog, and it catches on things so it would cause pain, either the dogs, or the persons. Also, they might also 'dangle' or 'hang'. One of my dogs didn't have it removed, and it gave me a cut 5 inches long and one deep, so I think removing it is a good thing.
Also, some dogs have dewclaws on front and back, and maybe even 'double dew claws'.
