I would like to get a redbone connhound, but was wondering how they do on a walk or in a park. Will they instinctively just take off if they smell a small animal? This is my concern. Also how are they with children?

They are wonderful with children. I suggest getting one as an adult/senior if you are new to hounds. They are easier to train, walk, and play with. They are just as active as pups. They learn not to bolt. The dogs probably won't run after every smell. you should let them walk towards it occasionally to ease their curiosity.
