When I got my rat terrier 11 years ago I put him in a cage whenever I left the house and when I went to sleep. I would throw in some toys for him when he was a pup because he was teething but he still chewed on his bed in the cage form time to time. After awhile he grew out of it and eventually after about a year I stopped using the cage and was able to leave him lose in the house and had no problems.
