The merle gene is not a standard pattern in poodles, it had to have been introduced by crossing with another breed. Poodles naturally come in solid, parti, and phantom. Merle is a foreign gene/pattern, usually found in herding breeds.
I would worry about someone breeding for merles in poodles. I do hope they understand the dangers of breeding merles and are honest enough with their puppy customers to explain that the pups they are producing are NOT pure poodles.
