When we rescued our Newfie, his previous owner did not care for him at all, he was covered in matts! So, we took him in and have him shaved down to 1/2 inch! He loved it! We bought a trimmer and tried it ourselves, there's too much fur! lol But we did manage to take off 2 inches. I totally suggest shaving your newfie because they will feel so much better and love it! The fur grows back at a normal pace, and they look adorable, like puppies when you shave them! Its much more comfortable for them too. especially for dogs that live in hotter climates. DO IT! At least twice a year, its great! They will thank you for it, guaranteed!

You have to remember a newfoundlands coat also protects them from the sun. Never go too short.

The Newfoundlands fur is not made to be shaved off. Some dogs seems to be alright and their fur grows back normally, while other's don't grow back at all. I would never suggest shaving your Newfoundland unless it is an absolute necessarity. The coat of the Newfoundland, if properly brushed out will keep the dog cool, protect it from the sun and be resistant to water as it was made for when kept long during the summer. The Newfoundland can over-heat, so a kiddie pool, water and shade is the best way to keep your dog cool during the warm months. As I said, some Newfoundlands fur grows back and some doesn't. I've seen Newfoundlands who's fur never grew back, and some it took nearly 3 years to fully grow back. Please be cautious.
