The Newfoundland's average life span is 8-10 years, sometimes shorter, and sometimes longer, depending on the breeder/linage of the dog. While the Border Collie lives an average life span of 12 years. Meaning that at 6 years old, your dog is bordering on being a senior. In which case, joint pain could be a factor in your dog not stretching. But if you do not feel/see any stiffness, pain or problems then I wouldn't be worried about it.
