Newfoundlands are amazing swimmer's. But, just like people, some love to swim and some don't. This all depends on how they are introduced to the water and if they get anything positive out of the experience. If your Newfoundland loves the water, but doesn't like to swim, using positive reinforcement techniques such as clicker or marker training can help you teach your Newfoundland to swim. I've found some Newfie's take to the water as puppies, while other's don't start to swim until they are 2-3 years old. But as I said, every dog is different.
