I own a english springer spaniel that we`ve had for now 15 years and we now her time is near, blind and deaf, it is just a matter of time, we also own a german shepherd/rotty mix, very protective kind dog she ways approximately 100 pounds, We are planning on getting another dog this summer, I am seriously thinking of the newfie dog beautiful intelligent dog. We have daughter that is a 11 years old so no young children int he house, do you think that the shepherd rotty and a newfie combination would be okay. The shepherd/rotty get alongs great with other dogs, kids. Cats are another story. Do you have any suggestions before I make this purchase or anything I should know?

I had a Newfie and they are the sweetest dogs you can find. They pretty much get along with every dog, but if your dog is challenging them they will not heisitate to snap at them. I also had a smaller dog that used to try and wrestle with the newfie. They newfie tried to swallow her head so try to keep that in mind.

Always research the breed you are interested in. Yes, newfoundlands are wonderful dogs, I would never have anything else. Remember, they love water and will be in it every chance they get, clean or dirty. You cannot bathe a newf all the time it drys out the oil on their coats. They drool ALOT, I have drop towels around my house. They make a HUGE mess when they drink, they slober on guest, they shed alot and their coat needs almost daily grooming that takes time with the double coat. If you can live with this and embrace it, it is a very small price for the love and companionship of a newf.
