I am about to acquire my first Havanese. The more I read, the more it seems that this breed NEEDS the companionship of other dogs, not just the owner. Is this true--can the 6 y.o. retired havanese be happy in a home w/no other pets? We are a active but retired couple...but can only have /handle one dog, for sure.... Barb.

A Havanese does not require other animals but it does require companionship from somewhere. Some owners do not have time to commit to this relationship and thus substitute other animals.

Our Havanese is an "only child" and is perfectly happy. This is an ideal breed for an active, retired couple. They are so sweet.
