GSDs will get along with almost any breed, though preferably not another strong-willed breed nor 2 females, though I've found 2 GSDs (either 2 males or 1 female/1male) will get along also. It also depends on how old the GSD is and how old the other dog is and who was there first. But in terms of physical play, obviously a German Shepherd will get more out of a dog that is similar in size.

I have found that hounds are easy-going and tend to get along well with more dominant dogs like the german shepherd well. Maybe a larger hound, such as the American foxhound or a bloodhound would be a nice buddy for your german shepherd.
