We had a 15 year old german shepherd Australian mix - he was having trouble getting up and when he was up he seemed normal it was hard to tell if he was in pain he was having bowel movements when he was laying down but he didnt realize it ..I'm still devastated that we had to put him down but for the other people out there going through this what is the right thing to do and how do you know if they are in pain even if they seem normal at times...

Our pets have illnesses just like we do. When you don't feel well you go to the doctor. The same go for your pet. The only knowledge you need to know is that my pet is acting differently. As a responsible owner I must take him to the doctor. Pets display their pain different. Sorry for your loss. I had to put my older boy down also....so hurtful.

Take your pet to the vet and ask if this is normal. It may also be his age.

I personally think it is old age. Usually Gsds live about 13 years. So sorry about your dog! I had a 1 year old gsd named maja that we had to put down when I was about 4. I am 11 now but still its REALLY REALLY sad to put down your companion.
