the scent within a dog's butt is a way of greeting each other and identifying the other dog. the same way a person would recognize another person by looking at them or shaking hands.

This is how dogs greet, meet, and identify each other. Every dog's identifying scent is different, and lies within, well, it's butt. It's the equivalent of a human shaking hands or telling their names.
