I was wondering why is it called a "smooth" dachshund? Is it the lack of loose skin? My dad has a mini dachshund that is about 20 lbs, 30" long almost and has no loose skin. When he was a puppy he looked animated. Can you tell me the difference between regular mini dachshund and smooth?

Smooth Dachshunds have one layer of fur, unlike the long-haired coats or the wire-haired coats that have two layers; one is an outer, rough hair while the hair underneath is softer. Smooth Doxies are simply that - smooth and soft coated. Also, if your dad's dachshund weighs 20 lbs., it's considered a Standard Dachshund, as Mini Dachshunds weigh 9-10 lbs. :)
