I got a supposedly 6 year old male long-haired dachshund from the shelter. A darling and beautiful dog. I had to have teeth cleaning and a couple of teeth pulled right after getting him. I cannot pick him up as you would any other dog,he cries out...Is this normal because of this long body or is something else wrong?. He weighed 18 lbs. when I got him and he has gained a few more since. It bothers me that I cannot put my arms around his body to pick him up. He is also very needy and jealous of my other dog who is 6yrs old and a long haired chuhuahua. any suggestions on picking him up and controlling his jealousy?

You're not supposed to pick up this type of dog like that. It's very bad for their backs. Look up how to properly pick up your dachshund. They are also a jealous dog by nature. Please do not pick up your dog that way! It could cause serious back problems.

Make sure you pick him up with one hand under the chest and one under the bum - it is crucial that you properly support their backs. Maybe take him to a vet or back to the shelter if you are seriously worried that something else is wrong and get him checked. And it may be that your dachie isn't used to other dogs... dachshunds also tend to form very close bonds with their owners, so perhaps there's just a natural bit of jealousy that you already have that with another dog. Plus they have BIG personalities! Here's hoping you'll all adjust well! :) cheers
