Rough and Smooth Collies usually shed their winter coats in the spring. Rough Females will shed their undercoats and some of their outer coat resulting in a lot less hair in the summer compared to the winter. Rough Males shed their undercoat but keep their long out coat during the summer. (That is why "Lassie" is always a trained male dog in the films) In the fall Collies will also shed some of the summer coat so they can grow a winter coat. My collies live outside mot of the year and a quick brushing once a week is sufficient unless they are shedding. Collies and most other dogs that spend most of their time inside will shed constantly. In hot humid areas PLEASE check your Rough Collie daily for HOTSPOTS!!
