I am very interested in getting one of these awesome dogs. The lab I had before has recently passed. My old dog and I often went to the dog park and always going on outtings with friends and their dogs. I see that normally the Shar-Pei breed does not do well with other dogs. Can this be avoided by early socialization?

Of course! Any dog can be good with socialization!

I have had Shar Pei's for over 25 years. It's the only breed I would consider. I feel safe, confident, and loved. Please remember to socialize your pup. They are great with other animals providing you get them used to being around other animals. One word of caution - males can be dominant so be cautious around other male dogs (if you decide to purchase a male). We find that pairs are wonderful - they keep each other company, and are really very self sufficient and smart. They are easily trained, but you need to be firm - if you give in, you will have lost the battle forever :)

Yes, they can be great with other animals. I have a 3 year old female Sharpei and six cats. She has never hurt one of my cats and she even sleeps with me and 2-4 cats on the bed at night. Sometimes she will chase them, if they stop running she stops chasing. I found that taking my dog to the dog park helped a lot in getting her socialized around other dogs. You just have to work with them.
