I have owned/raised two mastiffs, and I must say they are one of the best breeds that I have experienced. Concerning the ears, my oldest mastiff's, Tuff, ears never sat forward regardless of how many times we taped them. Comparatively, Deuce's, my youngest mastiff, ears have always sat forward as they are supposed to according to breed standards. All efforts came up short becuase Tuff liked to have his ears back, and his ears fit his personality. In regards to bug bites and ticks, Tuff did not experience any undue consequences because of his ears. I hope this helps. And good luck with trying to get the ears to lay forward.
