We had a boxer with a tail once, it was a good dog but its tail could literally leave bruises and sweep a table full of stuff on the ground. Their tails are as thick as the nubs they have left, thats alot of muscle on a tail. Its better that they have their tails taken off.

Most of the time their tails have been cropped but is because there tails are brittle. They have a tendency to brake. Which is like a human braking there tail bone.
